Maine MBB drops opening game to VA Tech

Maine drops their opener 82-47 to VA Tech. The Hokies high flying and hard playing athletes were too much for the Black Bears to handle. Despite the lopsided score, I was encouraged by the play of the Maine newcomers. Freshman point guard Byron Ireland and stretch 4 Kristians Feierbergs looked game ready and really held their own out there. Maine veteran forward Steph Ingo played hard but struggled offensively and with the physical strength of the Hokies Bigs. Luchaun Duhart and Vukasin Masic performed well in spurts. Maine defended well at times but struggled on the defensive glass and were slow to rotate to shooters. Maine needed some others to make positive contributions, but no one else was able to get on track offensively. Coach Barron rotated several players trying to work various combinations throughout the game. A tough early test for Maine, but it was encouraging to see them continue to compete until the end.  Maine has a keeper in Ireland who has a great feel for the game and ability to create off the dribble.

Agreed on Ireland.  Barron needs to play the newcomers...they are the future.  Poor Ingo....a great defensive guy but more like a 6th man.  Build around Ireland and Feierbergs!

MJ,

I agree that Ingo was outmatched last night and looked lost offensively-But dont forget he has 3 years left if you inlcude this year. His defensive presence in AE play will be a big help when playing against comparable size etc.

A few bright spots last night from the new guys and much better overall energy defensively. Nice to see Coach Steadman up and calling out the defensive calls.
