International gambles can be costly for Red SoxRead the words from Boston’s general manager after the Red Sox signed a Cuban sensation:“This is an exciting player. He’s got a great combination of skills, defensive ability, speed, solid power. He’s got a really strong track record in Cuba. We’re excited to add him to the organization and we feel he can be part of winning Red Sox teams here for a long time.”The player receiving all the praise was not Yoan Moncada, but Rusney Castillo. Before the Red Sox landed Moncada in March 2015, Boston GM Ben Cherington signed Castillo in August 2014 – at the urging of team ownership.Castillo was dropped from Boston’s 40-man roster last week, but the Red Sox are on the hook for the remainder of his $72.5 million contract that runs through 2020. Over parts of three seasons, he has played 99 games in the majors, batting .262 with seven home runs. ... r-red-sox/

[u:2fdw8o12]Bats go quiet as Red Sox shut out by Rays[/u:2fdw8o12]ST. PETERSBURG -- Matt Moore held the Red Sox hitless through five innings and escaped a key bases-loaded jam in the sixth as the Rays took Wednesday's rubber game, 4-0, at Tropicana Field.Moore had been in a similar situation just five days before when he took a no-hitter into the fifth and let Tampa Bay's lead collapse in the sixth. This time, though, he got out of the jam en route to seven scoreless innings."I was able to not have a bad relapse," Moore said. "I was able to reset with the bases loaded there and just to be able to stay on track and get a couple of those outs was probably the biggest reason [for success]." ... ut-by-rays
