Girls Cross Country: Careful planning helped Leonardi achieve the next step Abbey Leonardi adjusted her training and earned a coveted trip to the Foot Locker nationals.By GLENN JORDAN, Staff WriterAround this time last year, a winter storm knocked out power for much of Kennebunkport. Abbey Leonardi's home was among those affected, so she took her laptop computer to the library on a Saturday afternoon in order to view streaming video of the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships from San Diego. This year, Leonardi supplied her own power. She'll be one of 40 schoolgirls running through Balboa Park next Saturday in the national finals, the first time in 15 years a girl from Maine qualified for the race. After a phenomenal freshman season in which she won Class A state and New England titles, Leonardi successfully defended her state crown. She skipped New Englands when a weather-related change in the schedule eliminated a planned rest break, then placed second in the Foot Locker Northeast Regional. She is our repeat selection as MVP for girls' cross country. The choice wasn't quite as simple as it was last year, however, because Leonardi's main rival, Cheverus sophomore Emily Durgin, ended Leonardi's unbeaten streak in New England with a victory in the Western Maine regionals. Durgin went on to win the New England title and place seventh at the Foot Locker regional to punch her own ticket to San Diego.Click for full story ... 0&ac=PHspt

nice piece, good to recognize Emily D. If ever a year called for co-MVP's!
