Forecaster: Portland edition Winter Coaches of the Year

Sport: Basketball (Girls)  Message Board

Posted: April 12th, 2015 by Tom Nolette

Girls' team..BILLY GOODMAN, McAuley basketball..If there were any doubts about Goodman's coaching ability, and there shouldn't have been, they were dispelled this winter, when he took a McAuley roster lacking its usual star-power to within a few possessions of the opportunity to play for yet another state championship. Goodman also won the award in the fall of 2008 for his work with the Deering golf team and in the winter of 2009, with Greely's girls' basketball team...

The 2000 Bowdoin College graduate died Sunday from colon cancer, leaving what Sen. Angus King called "a hole in the heart of our community.". Whether he was coaching young girls to play basketball or counseling teenagers from a war-torn region of the world, Wil Smith was always there when he was needed. “He had boundless energy and enthusiasm for life,” said Tim Gilbride, the men’s basketball coach at Bowdoin. “And that was contagious to other people. He could get people to do things that they didn’t think they could do.”Smith died Sunday in Philadelphia after a three-year battle with colon cancer. He was 46 years old. Smith was remembered Monday as a caring man who affected everyone he met. “He was a giant of a person,” said Tim Foster, dean of students at Bowdoin College, who both counseled Smith as a student and later worked with him. “He was not only a friend, but a teacher to me as well. And that’s what I’m going to hold on to most.” Maine Sen. Angus King paid tribute to Smith in a statement submitted Monday to the U.S. Congressional Record...

McAuley's reign ends with loss to TA in regional final

Sport: Basketball (Girls)  Message Board

Posted: February 22nd, 2015 by Tom Nolette

PORTLAND—All good things must end. That painful reality was delivered to the state's most successful girls' basketball program Saturday evening at the Cross Insurance Arena. The McAuley Lions, the four-time Class A state champions and the gold standard since the start of the millennium, finally met their match in the regional final against the one team, second-ranked Thornton Academy, that has managed to give them fits the past couple seasons. McAuley came into the contest short-handed, after losing junior Sarah Clement to a knee injury in the semifinals, and the Lions knew they'd have to play close to a perfect game to handle the deep, talented and hungry Golden Trojans and for a half, they had things going their way...

The Trojans knock off the top-ranked Lions to advance to their first state championship game.

There will be a new girls’ basketball champion in Class A this year. Thornton Academy saw to that Saturday night when the second-ranked Trojans outlasted four-time defending state champ McAuley 41-31 to win the school’s first Western Class A championship at the Cross Insurance Arena. Senior forward Abby Strickland scored eight of her 12 points in the final quarter as the Trojans pulled away in the final minutes. “It feels awesome,” said Strickland, who also had five rebounds and two blocked shots. “It’s unbelievable to be a senior and accomplish this. There’s no words to describe how I feel right now.” Thornton (19-2) will play Lawrence (20-1) for the state championship at 3 p.m. next Saturday at the Augusta Civic Center...
