MPA panel approves basketball tournament sites

AUGUSTA, Maine — A nearly two-year push to update the state’s high school basketball environment achieved a final step Friday as a Maine Principals’ Association panel approved regional tournament sites for the five-class format set to be implemented next winter.

 

The Maine Principals’ Association’s Basketball Plenary Committee, which includes tournament committee members from around the state, voted 8-4 for a plan that maintains the status quo for the existing four classes while placing regional tournaments for the newly created Class AA that encompasses the state’s largest schools in Augusta and Portland.

Firecracker: Dalphonse Commits to Emmanuel

The final member of the Firecracker class of 2015 made her college selection yesterday when Olivia Dalphonse chose to study and play at Emmanuel College (division III) in Boston. Dalphonse had narrowed her choices to St. Michael’s (division II) and Rhode Island College (division III) before deciding to take her show to Beantown. Dalphonse was a key contributor to McAuley’s State Championships in both 2013 and 2014 after attending Bonny Eagle HS her freshman year...

Maine high school basketball to expand to five classes

ROCKPORT, Maine — Chris Young has worked on the front lines of the battle among Maine’s smallest high school basketball programs to remain competitive against ever-increasing odds.

 

The assistant principal and athletic administrator from tiny East Grand School in Danforth has watched his teams struggle to keep pace as larger schools with dwindling enrollments have joined them in Eastern Maine Class D ranks — though with still enough students in most cases to overwhelm the traditionally smaller schools in the quest for postseason glory.

Girls' team..BILLY GOODMAN, McAuley basketball..If there were any doubts about Goodman's coaching ability, and there shouldn't have been, they were dispelled this winter, when he took a McAuley roster lacking its usual star-power to within a few possessions of the opportunity to play for yet another state championship. For overcoming some seismic personnel losses in the offseason, for developing talent across the board and for putting the right pieces in the right places frequently enough to produce a 19-game win streak, Goodman gets our nod as our Portland edition Winter Coach of the Year, of a girls' team. Goodman also won the award in the fall of 2008 for his work with the Deering golf team and in the winter of 2009, with Greely's girls' basketball team...
