The 2000 Bowdoin College graduate died Sunday from colon cancer, leaving what Sen. Angus King called "a hole in the heart of our community.". Whether he was coaching young girls to play basketball or counseling teenagers from a war-torn region of the world, Wil Smith was always there when he was needed. “He had boundless energy and enthusiasm for life,” said Tim Gilbride, the men’s basketball coach at Bowdoin. “And that was contagious to other people. He could get people to do things that they didn’t think they could do.”Smith died Sunday in Philadelphia after a three-year battle with colon cancer. He was 46 years old. Smith was remembered Monday as a caring man who affected everyone he met. “He was a giant of a person,” said Tim Foster, dean of students at Bowdoin College, who both counseled Smith as a student and later worked with him. “He was not only a friend, but a teacher to me as well. And that’s what I’m going to hold on to most.” Maine Sen. Angus King paid tribute to Smith in a statement submitted Monday to the U.S. Congressional Record...

McAuley's reign ends with loss to TA in regional final

Sport: Basketball (Girls)  Message Board

PORTLAND—All good things must end. That painful reality was delivered to the state's most successful girls' basketball program Saturday evening at the Cross Insurance Arena. The McAuley Lions, the four-time Class A state champions and the gold standard since the start of the millennium, finally met their match in the regional final against the one team, second-ranked Thornton Academy, that has managed to give them fits the past couple seasons. McAuley came into the contest short-handed, after losing junior Sarah Clement to a knee injury in the semifinals, and the Lions knew they'd have to play close to a perfect game to handle the deep, talented and hungry Golden Trojans and for a half, they had things going their way...

The Trojans knock off the top-ranked Lions to advance to their first state championship game.

There will be a new girls’ basketball champion in Class A this year. Thornton Academy saw to that Saturday night when the second-ranked Trojans outlasted four-time defending state champ McAuley 41-31 to win the school’s first Western Class A championship at the Cross Insurance Arena. Senior forward Abby Strickland scored eight of her 12 points in the final quarter as the Trojans pulled away in the final minutes. “It feels awesome,” said Strickland, who also had five rebounds and two blocked shots. “It’s unbelievable to be a senior and accomplish this. There’s no words to describe how I feel right now.” Thornton (19-2) will play Lawrence (20-1) for the state championship at 3 p.m. next Saturday at the Augusta Civic Center...

McAuley loses standout for Western Class A girls' basketball final

Sarah Clement suffers an ACL tear for the second time and won't play against Thornton Academy.

From the moment girls’ basketball teams stepped onto the court for their first practices back in November, this is the game everyone anticipated. Top-seeded McAuley High (19-1) will play No. 2 Thornton Academy (18-2) for the Western Class A championship at 7 p.m. Saturday at Cross Insurance Arena. And if McAuley is going to win its fifth consecutive regional title, it will have to do so without standout junior shooting guard Sarah Clement. MRI results Friday confirmed what Clement feared after she suffered an injury in McAuley’s semifinal win Wednesday. She has again torn the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee and will have surgery Feb. 27. “It’s very disappointing,” said Clement, who missed her sophomore season while rehabbing from the same injury. “I had just gotten to full strength again.”...

PORTLAND—Since Day One this season, McAuley's girls' basketball team has persevered. Wednesday evening, the Lions had to rise to the occasion again in a Western Class A semifinal round game against South Portland at the Cross Insurance Arena. McAuley carried the top seed and a five-year, 17-game postseason win streak into the contest and appeared to be in good shape when a pair of 3-pointers from junior Sarah Clement spelled an early 10-2 lead, but late in the first quarter, Clement, who missed her entire sophomore season with a knee injury, hurt her knee again. But with the fifth-ranked Red Riots primed to take advantage, the Lions turned to their standby, their defense, to make the difference...
