GORHAM, Maine – Following an exhaustive national search University of Southern Maine Director of Athletics Al Bean has announced Samantha Allen as the next head coach of the nationally-regarded Huskies’ women’s basketball program.

“I'm very pleased to welcome Samantha Allen to USM as the next head coach of the women's basketball program. Since completing her outstanding collegiate playing career at Colby College, Sam has been preparing herself to become a head coach at the college level. Her stops along the way, at Smith College, the University of Vermont, and this past year, working directly with veteran mentor Gary Fifield, have prepared her very well to take the next step professionally,” noted USM Athletic Director Al Bean. “Samantha has tremendous knowledge of the game, is an excellent teacher and motivator and is totally committed to developing her craft. She has very close family ties to the University of Southern Maine and fully understands the magnitude of her new role as head coach. I look forward to working closely with Sam and have great confidence in her abilities to be an effective leader and make a positive difference for our student-athletes. It's my distinct pleasure to welcome Sam to the USM staff.”

AUGUSTA, Maine — A nearly two-year push to update the state’s high school basketball environment achieved a final step Friday as a Maine Principals’ Association panel approved regional tournament sites for the five-class format set to be implemented next winter.

The Maine Principals’ Association’s Basketball Plenary Committee, which includes tournament committee members from around the state, voted 8-4 for a plan that maintains the status quo for the existing four classes while placing regional tournaments for the newly created Class AA that encompasses the state’s largest schools in Augusta and Portland.

ROCKPORT, Maine — Chris Young has worked on the front lines of the battle among Maine’s smallest high school basketball programs to remain competitive against ever-increasing odds.

The assistant principal and athletic administrator from tiny East Grand School in Danforth has watched his teams struggle to keep pace as larger schools with dwindling enrollments have joined them in Eastern Maine Class D ranks — though with still enough students in most cases to overwhelm the traditionally smaller schools in the quest for postseason glory.

This time it's Greely...Rangers finally slay Lake Region

Sport: Basketball (Girls)  Message Board

Posted: February 18th, 2015 by Tom Nolette

PORTLAND—For three years, the championship hopes of the Greely girls' basketball team were cast asunder by the Lake Region Lakers. This winter, the Rangers finally said enough. Despite a marvelous 16-2 regular season, Greely's third seed forced it to battle Lake Region in the Western Class B quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon at the Portland Exposition Building and the fourth time proved to be the charm. The first period was played at the Lakers' pace, but Rangers senior standout Ashley Storey came alive late to give Greely a 10-7 lead. Then, after Lake Region tied the game on a 3-pointer 28 seconds into the second quarter, the Rangers' defense pitched a shutout the rest of the period and sophomore Isabel Porter came off the bench to produce nine points in a little over three minutes as Greely opened up a healthy 23-10 advantage...
