By Ernie Clark...BANGOR, Maine — Christian McCue developed into one of Eastern Maine’s top outside shooters earlier in his basketball career at Hampden Academy. But when asked to expand his game as a senior for the Broncos, the 6-foot-2 guard not only evolved into an all-around threat but led his team to the Class A state final.“A big concern coming into this season was whether Christian could make the adjustment from off guard to point guard where the ball would be in his hands a lot,” said Hampden coach Russ Bartlett. “As the season progressed, he really figured out when to be more aggressive with his own game and when to get his teammates more involved, and that was a big reason for our success.” Coaches and other observers statewide recognized McCue’s development, not only naming him Maine’s 2012 Mr. Basketball but also making him the leading vote-getter on the 57th annual Bangor Daily News All-Maine schoolboy basketball team. for full story

By Tom Chard.. A player with leadership helped end Clippers' drought. Josh Britten led the way and got teammates involved in Yarmouth's first state title since 1968. YARMOUTH — Right up there with his ability to score and play defense, Josh Britten's biggest contribution to Yarmouth's Class B state basketball championship was his leadership. "Josh has always been a leader but this year he became more vocal," said Coach Adam Smith. "Josh looked out for everyone on the team and made them better. As our point guard, he made sure the other players got their looks. It helped to give Chris (Knaub) and Sam (Torres) their confidence." For his performance this season, Britten is our choice as the Maine Sunday Telegram/Portland Press Herald Player of the Year for boys' basketball. for full story

By Michael Hoffer..PORTLAND—The top-ranked Deering boys' basketball team got all it could handle and more over the first 16 minutes from the upstart No. 9 Biddeford Tigers, but ultimately, the Rams had too much size, poise, defense and heart to bow out in their first postseason game Friday evening at the Portland Exposition Building. Trailing by three at halftime, Deering game out guns ablazing in the second half and the Tigers couldn't stop the Rams' three-pronged scoring attack of senior Jon Amabile (24 points) and juniors Labson Abwoch (20) and Thiwat Thiwat (20). Mix in another superb defensive effort from senior Patrick Green, who held Biddeford senior standout Bobby Cote to 20 points (only five after halftime) and clutch performances from the supporting cast and Deering pulled away for a 66-54 victory in a Western Class A quarterfinal.
