It didn't make any of the papers, but Waynflete enjoyed a stirring win at St. Dom's last night to stay red-hot in Western C action.

The Flyers entered the game on a three-game win streak, highlighted by an impressive 15-point home win over Yarmouth last week.

Waynflete beat St. Dom's 60-51 in Portland in the season opener way back on Dec. 7, but last night's game would go down to literally the final second.

Flyers' coach Rich Henry described the contest as "one of our traditional knockdown, dragout games...back and forth all game."

Waynflete led 27-26 at halftime and 42-39 going to the fourth, but there, things got really interesting as the hosts rallied to take a 55-53 lead inside of two minutes. The Flyers responded and tied the score when junior Hassan Jeylani scored on a layup after a steal.

On the ensuing Saints' possession, they turned it over and Waynflete freshman Joe Veroneau dove to the floor, came up with the ball and controlled it in time for the Flyers to take timeout.

The game came down to a buzzer-beater and who better to shoot with the game on the line than senior sharpshooter Lucas O'Neil? Waynflete got him the ball and despite having two defenders draped all over him, O'Neil calmly buried it for his 35th, 36th, and 37th points of the night!

Waynflete 58 St. Dom's 55.

The kicker was that St. Dom's had just beaten NYA on a buzzer-beater Saturday.

The Flyers are now 9-6 (and fifth in the Heals). They go to Sacopee Thursday, then close the regular year with home games versus Lake Region and Hyde next week. The team is certainly peaking at the right time.
