A sneak peak at the film on the football rivalry between Cape Elizabeth and Mountain Valley

WESTBROOK (July 7, 2009): There’s Rumford, the struggling town on the Androscoggin River where job opportunities are scarce. The paper mill — the town’s lifeblood — faces an uncertain future. The high school, Mountain Valley, has a proud football tradition that has united and excited the community for decades.

Then there’s Cape Elizabeth, an affluent coastal community where professionals settle to provide their children with the best opportunities. Expectations are high on the playing field and in the classroom. High school football is new to the town, which has a proud soccer tradition.

Kirk Wolfinger’s “The Rivals” is a film that chronicles the development of a football rivalry between the Mountain Valley Falcons and the Cape Elizabeth Capers during the 2007 high school season. It is set to premiere as the opening-night film at the Maine International Film Festival at the Waterville Opera House on Friday at 7 p.m. (For tickets, visit
