One sport or several sports: the choices they make

Some athletes must decide to devote all their time to one sport, or spend summers juggling.

Baseball or basketball? Basketball or soccer? Soccer or hockey? Hockey or football? Football or lacrosse?

High school athletes today have more choices than ever when it comes to summer sports. And it seems to be causing many of them to start deciding whether they want to continue playing multiple sports, or concentrate on one.

"You're seeing (specialization) more and more at a very young age," said Gary Fifield, the women's basketball coach at the University of Southern Maine. "And I really think that if they start specializing too soon, they really miss an opportunity for cross training and everything else.

"There is a certain point where it's a matter of keeping up with the Joneses; people are doing it because everyone else is specializing. And if you don't, and someone else is, you're going to be left behind."
