ELIOT, Maine — Bates College freshman and former Marshwood High School honors student Troy Pappas passed away Friday from injuries sustained in a fall down a stairwell last Saturday night.

Bates College President Clayton Spencer sent an e-mail to the Bates community around 10 p.m. Friday announcing the 18-year-old's death at 4:10 p.m. that afternoon.

"This news is heartbreaking for Troy's family and for the Bates community," Spencer wrote.

She said that the chapel on campus would remain opened until midnight Friday night. Today, Saturday, Oct. 6, the Bates community is invited to Chase Hall at 4:15 p.m. to remember Pappas "and to comfort one another in this time of sadness," Spencer said.

This is also parents' weekend at Bates.

Pappas fell down a stairwell in Parker Hall, a dormitory, from the third floor to the ground level at 9:30 p.m. Sept. 29. Lewiston police said Pappas and at least two other students were coming down the flight of stairs and Pappas was sliding down the banister when he apparently lost his balance and fell backward.

He had been at Central Maine Medical Center with a fractured skull and in an induced coma, Marshwood High School Principal Paul Mehlhorn had said.
