LEWISTON (July 7, 2009): This winter, the goals of Keegan Hyland and Dominic Borelli will not be compatible. Each will be looking to lead his team to a Western Maine Class A boys basketball title and a shot at the Gold Ball, Hyland playing for South Portland High and Borelli for Westbrook.

For now, however, the two are united in their ambition. As teammates on the MBR 17-and-under AAU basketball team, the players have their sights set high for the upcoming AAU Junior National Championships. The 2009 MBR 17s are looking to do even better than the 2007 team that finished 11th out of 153 teams, the best finish for a Maine boys squad at the national tournament.

“I think we can pretty much beat anybody,” said Hyland, a 6-foot-4 guard who will start his senior year at South Portland in the fall, before a recent practice at Bates College in Lewiston.

“We are down a little bit on size compared to the big programs, but I think if we shoot the ball well and compete the whole game — if we don’t let up the whole game — I think we can play with anybody in the country.”
