A freshman server and senior leadership helped give the Washington Academy Raiders a five-set victory over the Calais Blue Devils in the Class B state volleyball championship Saturday at Mount Desert Island High School in Bar Harbor.

The two teams split during the regular season, with each winning on their home courts, and it was another tight match in the state final where the Raiders of East Machias prevailed 25-23, 25-17, 18-25, 16-25, 15-6. Freshman Brecken Barker was WA’s starting server for the final match.

CUMBERLAND—Greely’s gold standard volleyball program has done it all over the past 14 years.

Except rally from a 2-0 deficit in a playoff match.

Until Wednesday night that is.

When the Rangers pulled off that very magic act and as a result, they’re just one win away from a record 10th state title.

YARMOUTH—Yarmouth’s volleyball team was so excited to get on to Cape Elizabeth that it dispatched Bonny Eagle in a mere 55 minutes in Thursday’s Class A preliminary round match.

The eighth-ranked Clippers didn’t allow the first-year varsity Scots, the No. 9 seed, to breathe in the first set, riding long service runs from junior Alison Clark and senior Kenzie Sheehan to erase an early 2-0 deficit en route to a 25-6 triumph.

YARMOUTH—A week into the season, Cape Elizabeth’s defending Class A state champion volleyball team was 0-2, which led to some questioning whether last year’s memorable title run was a fluke.

It wasn’t.

Fast forward to Saturday night where the Capers put the finishing touches on their 12th successive victory, one which cemented their status as the top seed for the upcoming playoffs and the team to beat.

FALMOUTH—We can only hope that the playoffs are half this dramatic.

Thursday evening’s Falmouth-Scarborough volleyball match didn’t merely double as the host Yachtsmen’s Senior Night, it also produced a bevy of thrills, a dose of controversy and a heroic performance which willed the home team to victory.

Falmouth snapped a three-match losing streak at the hands of the Red Storm, but it was anything but easy.

FALMOUTH—When Falmouth’s volleyball team lost the first set of Thursday evening’s showdown to visiting Yarmouth by a decisive 25-9 margin, it looked like it might be a long night for the Yachtsmen.

Instead, Falmouth had the Clippers right where it wanted them and the Yachtsmen resembled the champions they hope to become by roaring back with a vengeance.

After leading throughout in a 25-16 second set victory, Falmouth turned the third game in its favor thanks to a breathtaking individual play from junior libero Madi Tait and rode a few more well-placed shots to a 25-19 decision...
