Mansfield, MA. Mansfield SportsPlex

BABC defeated MBR in Pool play 69-62 on Sat (click to see Part 1 or Part 2 of video clips from MBR/BABC pool play game) during the AAU super regional in the 17u division. Both Teams met again for the championship on Sunday with BABC taking the championship 94-75.

BABC switched up defenses on MBR and took advantage of missed shots and turnovers to open up a 47-25 half time lead. MBR cut the lead to 4 with 13.02 to play following 8 made free throws made by Maine’s sophomore Keegan Hyland (27 pts) ( 6’3” South Portland , ME.). The 8 made free throws came after double technical fouls were charged against Jamaal Coombs and the BABC bench, The technical were assessed against the BABC when an apparent intentional foul was not called went and the bench defended their players.

BABC playing without Phil Pressey (5’9” class of 2010, Cushing Academy) this weekend (school function) had to finish the game without the 6’7” UCONN bound Jamaal Coombs (11 pts) ( Tilton school) . Defensive intensity and strong play by Gerard Coleman ( 27 pts), who will be attending Tilton school in the fall along with Coombs and Oriakhi, Darryl Bishop ( 15 pts) ( Lawrence Academy) Malik Smith ( 22 pts) ( Notre Dame prep) and UCONN bound Alex Oriakhi (12 pts) ( Tilton School) went on a 34-15 run on the final 5:24 to take the championship.

MBR – ( Maine) defeated The Raiders in a 2 point thriller earlier in the day in qtr-final play and then defeated the BABC ( South) team 73-52 in the semi-final game to meet up with BABC in the championship game.

MBR player notes::

Thomas Knight (6’8” class of 2009, Dirigo HS, Dixfield, ME) the big lefty continues to impress. A face up four man, Knight has great touch, can step out and shoot with range, the quick jumper blocked shots and rebounded well all weekend. He has 5 offers ( Maine, BU, UNH, Lehigh and Bryant), but expect the level of offers to rise as he is a top prospect from the region.

Keegan Hyland ( 6’3” class of 2010, South Portland HS, South Portland , ME) was very impressive all weekend. A scholarship prospect, Hyland is a scorer with excellent range, can put it on the floor and pull up on the mid-range jumper. He rebounds well from his position.. Keep an eye on this young man ..

Derek Libby , a scholarship prospect ( 6’2” class of 2008 – Mattanawcook HS, Lincoln, ME - MCI prep in the fall) is a tenacious player who can score in so many ways, deep range, take it to the basket. Last summer, Libby led the MBR team in scoring on their way to an 11th place AAU national finish.

Lee Suvlu (a scholarship prospect ( 6’4” class of 2008 – Bangor HS, Bangor ME - MCI prep in the fall ) can do many things on the floor. Suvlu elevates well on his jumper with good range, can put it on the floor and showed his ability to get to the rim.

Stefano Mancini (6’0” class of 2010 – Falmouth HS, Falmouth, ME. ) is handling the point guard position for MBR. He is a tough competitor who can shoot the deep ball.

Jacob Moore (6’5” class of 2010 – Hampden Academy, Hampden, ME. ) is a talented , strong wing player who can shoot with range and has a nice mid-range jumper. He can rebound, bust out and go end to end.

Graham Safford (5’10” class of 2011 – Camden Hills HS, Camden , ME. ) is a strong tenacious competitor. He brings lots of energy and ability to the floor. A point guard who can score, defend and get to the basket.
