EAGLES SOAR ON THE AIR

Sport:   Posted: June 22nd, 2008 by Tom Nolette

June 21, 2008
The BC High Eagles celebrated their Division I baseball championship Saturday as Mike Shalin and Danny Ventura continued the MBR On The Air Summer of Champions at 1510, The Zone’s Marina Bay Studios.

BC coach Norm Walsh, accompanied by players Tom Conley, Matt Kelly and Bill Kiley, spent the second hour of the two-hour show talking about their run to the title, which capped an incredible year for the school on the athletic field.

“After honoring the Reading hockey team as our first champions, it was great having this group with us,” Shalin said. “We had a lot of fun as we welcomed summer and continued our salutes.”

Part of that fun was Danny V. calling out basketball coach Bill Loughnane, jokingly calling the coach “a fraud” in an attempt to get Loughnane to call in. Sure enough, he called the show and had a great time with the other BC folks – and Danny V. Loughnane coached Kelly on last year’s state title hoop team, which won a sectional this past season.

Conley is headed for UMass-Amherst in the fall, while Kelly will be at Westfield State, the team the Eagles beat for the baseball title. Kiley, a double winner along with Conley as the BC High football team also won its league championship, just finished his junior year.

While the second hour of the program was one of happiness, time was spent in the first hour talking about the sudden passing of long-time Hingham hockey coach Garrett Reagan. Reading coach Peter Doherty was on the line with reminiscences of a fellow veteran coach mentor and leader.

Brockton football coach Peter Colombo and Xaverian kicker Paul Asack – headed for Duke – were on board via the hotline talking about Friday night’s Shriner's football game.

Stay tuned for more guest information and remember, the Summer of Champions will continue right up to the start of the fall athletic season – as the wildfire that is MBR On The Air continues spread.
