Winthrop tops Hall-Dale for thrilling double-OT win

Playing at top speed from beginning to end, Hall-Dale and Winthrop put on a show with the Ramblers pulling out an 85-78 double-overtime win in a classic Mountain Valley Conference boys basketball battle.

Vose lifts Lynx past Old Town

After starting the season 7-1, the Lynx endured five straight losses — including two in double-overtime and two others by one and two points.

Mattanawcook was on the brink of heartbreak again Thursday night, but senior guard Brady Vose tied the game with six seconds left in regulation and scored the first five points of overtime to lift the Lynx past Old Town 63-50 at MacKenzie Gymnasium.

When you've won 59 games in a row, people take notice when someone plays you competitively. The Waterville girls basketball team had a couple close games earlier this winter, but appears to be rounding into top form as the playoffs approach.

LINCOLN, Maine — It was a game of runs, and fortunately for the Mattanawcook girls basketball team, the Lynx had plenty of them.

The hosts steamrolled out to a 14-point halftime lead only to have Old Town whittle that to only three late in the third quarter, but MA persevered and outscored the Coyotes 21-8 over the final 9:21 to post a 58-39 Big East victory Wednesday night.

Famed coach, referee Charlie Katsiaficas dies at 82

Katsiaficas, the son of Greek immigrants from Nashua, N.H., made his mark as a coach at Ellsworth High School and as a basketball referee at the high school and college levels. He was also a baseball umpire.

He only coached the Ellsworth boys basketball team for five years but led the Eagles to undefeated back-to-back state Class L championships in his second and third seasons and berths in the New England Championships.

Noble 38, Thornton 34

Sloane Sorrell had 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead Noble (9-4) over Thornton Academy (3-10) at North Berwick.

Becky Creveling finished with 15 points and scored all 13 of Noble's first-quarter points. Sorrell scored all 10 of the Knights' points in the third quarter.

Sorrell, Erica Anderson and Taylor O'Neil made free throws in the final 1:30 of the game to preserve the lead.

SP 57, Bonny Eagle 26

Danielle McCusker scored 22 of her game-high 25 points in the first half as the Red Riots (7-5) opened a 30-14 lead against the Scots (3-9)

Waynflete 63, Hyde 54

John Malia scored 10 of his game-high 26 points in the third quarter to help Waynflete (3-9) pull away from Hyde (5-2) at Bath.

After a 29-29 halftime tie, the Flyers took control in the third period with aggressive rebounding and crisper passing to open a 51-41 lead.

Cecil Gardner added 15 points and Bill Ngoal had 11 for Waynflete.

Deon Richardson led Hyde with 19 points.

SP 81, Kennebunk 40

Keegan Hyland scored 34 points as the Red Riots (12-1) rolled past the Rams (2-11) at South Portland.

Hyland scored 30 points in the first half as the Riots opened a 51-17 lead.

George Jarvis led Kennebunk with 13 points.

Deering 72, Massabesic 56

Khadar Abbas scored 22 points, and Jamie Ross added 14 points and 12 rebounds Tuesday night to lead Deering to a 72-56 victory against Massabesic in a Southern Maine Activities Association schoolboy basketball game.

Deering (9-4) also got 15 points and nine rebounds from Ian Nono, and 14 points and seven boards from Ronald Abwoch.

Jimmy Thyng led Massabesic (4-8) with 17 points. David Chaves added 15.

It's a form-fitter

SACO — Thornton Academy has a balanced offense where, on any given night, any starter can be the leading scorer.

Usually it's James Morse or Andrew Shaw, but Tuesday night it was Michael Guerin who scored a career-high 25 points, sparking the Golden Trojans to an 83-59 win over Bonny Eagle in a Southern Maine Activities Association boys' basketball game at Linnell Gym.
