WELLESLEY GIRLS HOOP IT UP ON THE AIR

Aug. 20, 2008

Wellesley celebrated its first girls’ basketball state title when coach Kristin Cieri and three players joined Mike Shalin and Danny Ventura Wednesday at the 1510 The Zone studios in Marina Bay.

Jesse Miller, who had a double-double in the state championship win over Millbury, Chelsea Sanders and Corley Stone joined their coach as Shales and Danny V. continued their Summer of Champions series.

“Another great group for another chapter in a great summer,” Shalin said. “It’s clear this was a close group of girls that won as a unit – and they did a good job with us on the air.”

Wellesley athletic director John Brown was among the callers to the hotline as the girls were feted after their 23-3 season.

The first hour of the latest installment of the show featured a visit by Middlesex Magic coach Mike Crotty, three players – Jameel Galloway and Bryan Hurley of the BC High and Brian Edgerley of Nobles – and director Mike Daley. BC High coach Bill Loughnane joined via the hotline.

The Summer of Champions continues Saturday with an appearance by the Barnstable girls’ volleyball team, which won the school’s fifth straight state title this past season – led by All-American Kara Cullen.

The first annual No Player Left Behind charity golf tournament will take place Oct. 2 at the Presidents Golf Club in Quincy. For information on playing, sponsoring a hole, or helping out any way you can, contact Joe Martone at joe@mbr.org.

No Player Left Behind is our non-profit arm, which provides funds to kids (and even programs) short on cash as they attempt to compete.

You can join the growing list of advertisers climbing aboard this fast-growing show by contacting Shalin at shales@mbr.org.
