By Matt Boutwell.. AUGUSTA—The score at the end of three quarters was Waynflete 49, Wiscasset 33. The Wiscasset fans seated behind media row were growing frustrated and it seemed all that was left was to play out the final eight minutes of the game.  However, after third-seeded Boothbay fell to sixth-seeded Old Orchard Beach by 30 points in the earlier game of the day, the smell of the upset still hung heavy in the air at the Augusta Civic Center. The final score was Waynflete 59-48, but that wasn’t indicative of how competitive the fourth quarter was.  For full story

By Mike Lowe..PORTLAND — Somehow, improbably, maybe impossibly, Scarborough High is moving on in the Western Class A girls basketball tournament.  The second-ranked Red Storm, struggling with their shooting all game, relied on defense and foul shooting in the fourth quarter to surge past No. 7 Cheverus 39-35 at the Portland Expo, a win that left Scarborough Coach Tom Maines choked up and teary-eyed afterward.   for full story

By MARK JEANNERET..PORTLAND — When Meghan Gribbin saw an opening she exploited it. When she was being double-teamed, she withstood the extreme pressure and passed to an open teammate. And when she got to the line in key situations, she made the shots. Gribbin, a senior guard, did just about everything Monday night as No. 5 Windham topped fourth-seeded Deering 45-33 in a Western Class A girls' basketball quarterfinal at the Portland Expo. "There's a reason she's the SMAA Player of the Year," said Windham Coach Jessie Cummings after watching Gribbin score a game-high 26 points  for full story

By Gary Hawkins..AUGUSTA -- Six-foot-5 shot-blocking centers usually play offense in the low post. Not Sam Shepherd. The Hall-Dale junior is much more at home at the 3-point line and it showed Monday night. Shepherd knocked down six 3-pointers, including two in the final three minutes, to lead fourth-seeded Hall-Dale to a 74-68 win against No. 5 Madison in the opening round of the Western Maine Class C tournament.   for full story

By Kevin Mills..AUGUSTA — Midway through the second quarter, Rangeley seemingly had had enough. For the better part of the opening quarter and part of the second, the Greater Portland Christian girls' basketball team hung around and made Monday's Western D quarterfinal more difficult than the Lakers hoped. GPC was within three points when Rangeley decided it was time to get down to business. "We all needed to step it up," said Chantal Carrier, a Rangeley senior. The Lakers finished the second quarter strong and doubled their lead. Rangeley then broke the game open in the third quarter for a 65-43 victory over the Lions.  for full story

Class C West quarterfinal: Dirigo drops stingy Sacopee

Sport: Basketball (Boys)

Posted: February 21st, 2012

Message Board

By Kalle Oakes..AUGUSTA — Dirigo has set the boys’ basketball bar in Western Class C. The Cougars have moved it incrementally higher with each game the past four years. And when they don’t clear it — even when their performance would satisfy any of the competition’s standards — they aren’t shy about admitting it. Passes didn’t travel crisply. Shots didn’t fall consistently. Defensive lapses were more frequent than usual. Oh, and No. 1 Dirigo still smacked No. 8 Sacopee Valley, 68-37, in a regional quarterfinal Monday night at Augusta Civic Center.  for full story

By Ryan McLaughlin and Larry Mahoney...BANGOR, Maine — Playing on the same hardwood that her father Matt graced a generation ago, it’s understandable that Parise Rossignol was a tad nervous early in Monday night’s Eastern Maine Class D girls basketball quarterfinal at the Bangor Auditorium. But when the Van Buren sophomore’s first shot of the night — a 3-pointer from the top of the key — swished through the net, the nerves were gone. “I needed that one to go in because my heart was about to pop out of my chest,” said Rossignol, who registered 33 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and five blocked shots to power fourth-ranked Van Buren to a 72-45 win over No. 5 Shead of Eastport.  for full story
