Football: Fitzpatrick Trophy field cut to 3 finalists
BY TOM CHARD, Portland Press Herald Three players who were on the field during state championship Saturday on Nov. 21 are finalists for the James J. Fitzpatrick Trophy.
Jack Mallis of Windham, Nic Crutchfield of Dirigo and Lonnie Hackett of Bangor have emerged as the top three vote-getters in balloting by the state's high school football coaches and media. The winner will be announced at the 39th Fitzpatrick banquet on Jan. 17, beginning at noon at the Holiday Inn By The Bay in Portland.
Mallis, Crutchfield and Hackett were among 11 players selected as semifinalists by the Fitzpatrick Trophy committee who reviewed nominations submitted by the coaches. Each head coach in the state is allowed to submit the name of a senior player on their team deemed to be deserving of the award.
Mallis, a halfback and defensive back, scored four touchdowns to lead Windham to its first state title with a 35-21 win against Bangor. This season, he scored 26 touchdowns and rushed for 1,686 yards.
