Derrick looking past struggles, focused on team performance

ORONO - Many predicted Maine softball to be at or near the top of America East this season, the Black Bears have lived up to expectations as they are in second place.

But, their ascent to the top of America East has been without production from their biggest bat.

After hitting .300 and crushing a program record 15 home runs last season, Derrick has struggled in 2018. The slugger is hitting .190 and only has three home runs at the midway point of the season.

UMaine softball pitcher shines after suspension last spring for pizza house brawl

...“It was a great learning experience,” Kennedy said. “I’ve grown up a lot. I’ve moved on from it.”

She is well on her way to atonement this season.

Kennedy is the ace of the staff, sporting a 6-4 record with three saves and a 1.58 earned run average. She has struck out 57 and walked 10 in 79 2/3 innings.

Kennedy has allowed 86 hits, but only 16 for extra bases. Opponents are hitting .266 against her.

The Black Bears are 14-16 overall (5-2 in America East) after Wednesday’s doubleheader split against UMass Lowell at Kessock Field in Orono.

Softball Takes Doubleheader From UMBC

ORONO, Maine -- Annie Kennedy picked up two wins in the circle as the University of Maine softball team swept Saturday's doubleheader with UMBC at Kessock Field. The Black Bears were victorious by a 3-0 final in game one before capturing game two, 5-3. The wins improved the Black Bears to 16-16 overall and 7-2 in America East action.

Highlights - Game One
Highlights - Game Two

Kennedy picked up her seventh and eighth wins of the season after surrendering just one run over 8.1 innings of work. The senior started game one, tossing a 6.0 inning shutout while allowing just three hits and striking out five with no walks to earn her first win of the day. In game two, Kennedy came on in relief to earn the win, pitching the final 2.1 innings while giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

Offensively, four Black Bears finished the day with three hits. Rachel Carlson led the pack with a 3-for-5 showing with a triple, two runs and two RBIs. Laurine German also went 3-for-5, scoring two runs and adding an RBI while Kristen Niland tallied her team-leading sixth double, finishing with three hits and a run. Maddie Decker also chipped in a three-hit performance while Alyssa Derrick drove in three runs on the day.

In game one, the Black Bears broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the home half of the fifth. Carlson went 2-for-2 with a run in Maine's 3-0 victory while Derrick drove in a pair of runs. German added a 1-for-1 day with an RBI and a run scored.

In the bottom of the fifth, Carlson got the rally started when she shot a deep fly the opposite way to left. Carlson hit second and kept sprinting, reaching third safely for a triple. German's swinging bunt down the first baseline allowed Carlson to sprint in from third as the senior's hook slide around the catcher gave the Black Bears a 1-0 advantage. Later on in the inning, with runners at the corners and two out, Derrick shot a double the opposite way to the gap in right center. German and Leonard came around to score on the play, giving Maine a 3-0 lead.

After Kennedy put the Retrievers away in the sixth, Molly Flowers came on in relief for the seventh. Flowers struck out one and secured the victory, along with her second save of the season, for the Black Bears.

In game two, Derrick's RBI single in the fifth broke a 2-2 tie before Maine tacked on two more runs in the sixth to take the victory, 5-3.

Nine different Black Bears tallied a hit in the win, led by German and Decker's two-hit performances. Carlson added a hit, two RBI and a run while Leonard drove in a pair for Maine's third consecutive victory.

Kyleigh O'Donnell got the start for Maine, working 4.2 innings while giving up two runs, none earned, on three hits with six strikeouts in the no decision. Kennedy tossed 2.1 innings in relief, earning the win to improve to 8-4 on the year.

Maine jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Back-to-back singles from German and Decker started the rally before the duo advanced on a passed ball. Leonard's sac-fly to left brought in German with the first run of the contest.

The Black Bears tacked on a run in the second when they loaded the bases before Carlson's sac-fly to center allowed Niland to tag and score from third.

The Retrievers tied things up, first cutting the lead in half with a run in the fourth before tying it in the fifth on Tori Alexander's sac-fly.

However, Maine would have the answer in the bottom of the fifth. With two away, Decker singled down the left field line before being lifted in favor of pinch runner Shanna Scribner. Scribner moved to second on Leonard's walk before Derrick's single to left scored Scribner, regaining a one run lead for the Black Bears.

Maine tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Amanda Nee started the inning with a double over the left fielder's head. Maddie Kimble came on to run for Nee, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Emily Gilmore. Carlson's sharp single to short brought in Kimble from third. German followed with a single through the right side before Leonard's single back up the box plated Carlson.

The Black Bears would carry a 5-2 advantage into the seventh.

UMBC was able to get one back in the top of the seventh frame but it could not close the gap any further. Kennedy fanned the final batter of the inning as the Black Bears completed the sweep with a 5-3 victory.

The two teams close the series on Sunday at 11 a.m.
