From high school role player to college all-star
Gorham's Kristen Curley became a standout in her freshman season at USM.

USM women’s basketball coach Samantha Allen believed in Curley, the hometown kid from Gorham High.

“She’s been on our radar for a while as someone with tremendous athletic potential,” Allen said.

Then it was up to Curley to have faith that she could grow into a starring role.

On Tuesday, the 5-foot-10 Curley was named the New England Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association (NEWBA) Rookie of the Year and to the NEWBA all-rookie team. Previously Curley was tabbed by the Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association as its rookie of the year and a second-team all-state player.

Graham’s Bowdoin squad bound for Final Four

BRUNSWICK, Maine — Hannah Graham and her Bowdoin Polar Bears are heading to the Final Four after winning their first four games in the NCAA Div. III National Basketball Tournament.
Graham, a 2015 graduate of Presque Isle High School and standout player for the Wildcats under coach Jeff Hudson, averages 6.3 points per game for Bowdoin.

The junior, who has played in all 30 of her team’s games, shoots 52.3 percent from 3-point land and 93.3 percent from the foul line.

Bowdoin owns a record of 28-2. The team beat Husson College in the first round, 94-32, before downing FDU-Florham of Madison, New Jersey, 79-57. Both of those games were played in Brunswick.

Versatile Kerrigan standing out for Bowdoin

...Kerrigan is the only player in Bowdoin history with more than 900 points, 600 rebounds, 300 assists and 200 steals in her career. With seven points in Friday’s national semifinal game against No. 2 Wartburg she’ll reach 1,000 career points.

“You look at those stats and you’re like, ‘OK, this girl is obviously incredible,’ but those people don’t get to practice with her every day,” said Bowdoin forward and tri-captian Lydia Caputi. “She’s the type of person that if you’re team loses a drill and you’re running a sprint, you’re chasing Kate. You’re always chasing Kate.”

Now Kerrigan and her teammates are chasing Bowdoin’s first women’s basketball title. If the Polar Bears beat Wartburg, either top-ranked league rival Amherst (31-0) or No. 3 Thomas More of Kentucky (30-1) will be Saturday’s opponent in the championship game at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Minnesota.

Speed kills for Choate
Bowdoin junior point guard leads Polar Bears into NCAA Final Four

Later today, the Bowdoin College women’s basketball team will board their team bus for Logan Airport in Boston before jetting off to Minneapolis, Minnesota, for Friday’s NCAA Division III national finals, where the Polar Bears face undefeated and second-ranked Wartburg at 8: 30 p.m.

Flying to Minnesota on a fast- moving jet seems rather symbolic for Bowdoin junior point guard Taylor Choate, who has sped her way all over the court in helping the Polar Bears to a stellar 28-2 record and a spot in Friday’s Final Four.

When watching the Polar Bears, it is important to keep your eyes on the court when Choate has the ball. A blink or two of one’s eyes can mean missing a couple key plays from the junior as she quickly sprints down the court , either cutting to the basket for an open layup or dishing the ball to an unmarked teammate after drawing the defense her way.
