Incarnate Word Tops Baseball, 2-0, in First Game of Non-Conference Series

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word crossed the plate once in the bottom of the first inning and it would be the only run needed, as the Cardinals topped the University of Maine baseball team, 2-0, on Tuesday night at Sullivan Field.

Alex McKenney went five innings in his first career start, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits. Jonathan Bennett, Brandon Vicens, and Cody Pasic registered hits for Maine.

The Black Bears worked two, three-ball counts in the first inning – and Bennett reached on a single but couldn't cross the plate. A double from Lee Thomas in the bottom half of the inning would drive in a run to give the Cardinals the early 1-0 lead.

In his first career start, McKenney settled in after giving up the early run and retired the side in the bottom half of the second. A wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth, however, would allow a run to score and the Cardinals to lead by two after four innings.

Hernen Sardinas laced a ball towards right field in the top of the sixth but a diving play by Kyle Bergeron ended the inning. Cody Pasic led off the eighth with a single to right field and then he moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Kevin Doody. Pasic then made it safely to third when Caleb Kerbs drove a ball to the pitcher for a fielder's choice play to first. However, that would be as far as Pasic would make it and Maine wouldn't be able to push a run across the plate on the night.

Matt Geoffrion, Zach Winn and Cody Laweryson each went one inning in relief and each allowed one hit. MckEnney, Winn and Laweryson each had one strikeout while Geoffrion had two in the low-scoring affair.

The Cardinals (12-6) and Black Bears (4-12) will close out the two-game, non-conference series tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at Sullivan Field.

This team is having a tough time getting hits & scoring runs. They are wasting some decent pitching performances.

Then other times they hammer the ball all over the place. Frustrating at times for sure. The competition they are playing is better than anything they will see in AE play,so hopefully by next weekend they get it clicking. I see a lot of promise in this pitching roster. I am more encouraged than discouraged at this point.

Good points Bam and I concur. The competition in the Southland Conference and the Western Athletic Conference is better than any the Bears will face in America East. Add in Texas Tech, Miami and Ohio from the Mid-American Conference and the Bears are building depth and working to learn to compete day in and day out. I also agree with the depth pertaining to the pitching staff. They have some good arms and many guys they can rely on. Courtney has been a reliable number one and they have a number of guys they can turn to. I really like the arms in the Sophomore and Freshman class. And Silva showed what he is capable of last weekend.
