Former UMaine women’s coach to take over men’s basketball team
Richard Barron replaces Bob Walsh, whose contract expires after a 24-100 record over four years.

...Monday’s announcement comes at a time of significant changes for UMaine athletics. Creech is in his final week at the school, preparing to take a similar position at the University of Denver starting May 1. On Friday, Maine announced Amy Vachon as the new head coach of its women’s basketball program, after she served as the interim coach while Barron was on medical leave.

A women’s basketball coach making the switch to a men’s program is unusual at the NCAA Division I level. One of the few examples is LaSalle’s Speedy Morris, who moved after two years as the women’s coach (1984-86) to becoming the school’s men’s coach for 15 years.

Barron has been coaching women’s teams since 1996, when he became head coach of the Division III University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, after four years as an assistant with the men’s team.

While Barron will have to make new recruiting contacts, the coaching won’t change much...

Clearly a financial move. They'd still have to pay Barron, as well as having to pay a new coach.

He's not exactly following footsteps that can't be filled.....24 - 100 is Washington Generals like. I'd still take Walsh over Woodward though !

That's like saying you'd take a kick in the balls as opposed to a taser to them. hahaha

Agreed but both were unacceptable.

UMaine’s Barron completes his coaching comeback

...“My contract allowed me to come back and coach the women’s team at any point,” Barron said, “but I was very happy with the transition that we had made so being able to serve as the assistant to the AD was a way for the university not to incur any more salary than what they already had so I wasn’t hurting the university by coming back and I wasn’t firing somebody.

“When Karlton and I first started talking I said I didn’t want my successful surgery to be a burden on anybody. I don’t want someone to look back and say, ‘I wish the doctors had screwed up.’ I just wanted everybody to make this a win-win story. I wanted everyone to feel good about this.”

Barron did not seek to return to the women’s basketball head job, and Vachon was signed last Friday to a four-year contract to remain in her current post.

Yet the urge to coach remained.
