Dor Saar Leads UMaine Hoop

ORONO, MAINE (WABI)- UMaine women's basketball wrapped up the regular season conference title Sunday. The Black Bears have made big improvements over the course of the season. One of the reasons that happened is because of the play of Dor Saar.

Unfazed by low preseason league ranking, No. 1 UMaine eyes tourney title

...“I don’t blame the coaches for doing that,” said Vachon. “We lost seven players. If I’m on the outside looking in, I probably would have done the same thing.”

UMaine usually starts three sophomores in guards Blanca Millan and Julie Brosseau and forward Fanny Wadling along with junior guard Tanesha Sutton and freshman point guard Dor Saar. Senior Kirsten Johnson is the first inside player off the bench and junior Parise Rossignol is the first guard to substitute in.

Millan, who averaged 28.2 minutes of playing time a year ago, Sutton (25.6) and Brosseau (23.4) were the only returning players who saw more than 5.5 minutes of playing time.

“This is a such a special group,” said Vachon. “They are so dedicated to each other, the program and to the coaches.

UMaine women’s basketball went from afterthought to favorites
The Black Bears looked in trouble after last season, but rebounded to become the America East Tournament's No. 1 seed.

...Vachon still needed depth and gladly welcomed Rossignol back – although her contribution was uncertain. Rossignol, from Van Buren where she scored 2,589 career points in high school, played little in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.

Now she is the first guard off the bench, averaging 21 minutes and 4.6 points per game.

“I’m so proud of her,” Vachon said. “Talk about a story. She’s a good one.”

Rossignol said she left the team for personal reasons. “I wasn’t having fun,” she said.

Maine women's basketball hungry to end 14-year America East title drought

...“You know it was our first game together as a team and the thing is when it’s your first time playing together with people you have to build chemistry on the court,” guard Tanesha Sutton said.

"I never doubted these kids, I think it opened our eyes to how hard you have to work every game and everyday in practice," head coach Amy Vachon said.

That chemistry has been clicking for Maine since that exhibition loss.

The catalyst...Sutton.

If it wasn’t obvious to the casual fan look no further than the regular season finale against Albany, the moment Blanca Millan fouled out late in a tight game, with the regular season crown on the line.

“It was a crazy call and I was mad actually, I was like no we gotta go, it’s go time,” Sutton said.
