Track and Field to Open Outdoor Season at UCF Black and Gold Challenge this Weekend

ORONO, Maine – While the snow continues to fall in the Pine Tree State, the UMaine men's and women's track and field team begins the outdoor season this weekend in Orlando at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge.

Action at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex begins with field events on Friday at 11:00 a.m., with the running events slated to start at 6:20 p.m. For the full weekend schedule, click here

Maine will compete against top competition in Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio State, Florida State, South Carolina, and UConn, among others.

On Friday, Alecsander Wortman opens the weekend for Maine in the pole vault. The senior enters his final season at UMaine tied for eighth in school history in reaching a personal-record height of 4.55m last season.

UMaine's Barnsdale With one of Nation's Best Hammer Throws

Men’s Track and Field Grabs Second Place among Six Teams at New Hampshire

DURHAM, N.H. – In its first action since March 17th, the UMaine men's track and field team earned second-place against Holy Cross, UMass Lowell, Colby and meet hosts UNH on Saturday afternoon at Reggie Atkins Track and Field Facility. Maine totaled 168 points on the day.

The Black Bears won four events on the day, including two from Benjamin Davis. Davis won the 100m (10.85) and 200m (22.36) to earn a total of 18 points on the day for Maine. Both individual runs were personal bests for the senior. Mozai Nelson followed Davis with a second-place finish in the 200m (22.37), along with placing third in the 100m (10.99). Both of Davis's and Nelson's times in the 100m met IC4A qualifying standards.

The 800m saw Maine grab four of the top eight finishes, led by a first-place finish from Jacob Johns (1:57.70) and a runner-up performance from John Hassett (1:58.58). Ethan Orach crossed the finish line in fourth with a time of 1:59.31, while Cooper Nelson followed in eight (2:03.63).

Women’s Track and Field Wins UNH Season Opener

DURHAM, N.H. – The UMaine women's track and field team competed as a full squad for the first time in the outdoor season on Saturday, taking first among the field of New Hampshire, Holy Cross, Colby and UMass Lowell at the Reggie Atkins Track and Field Facility. The Black Bears totaled 166 points on the day, edging out second-place UNH by a single point.

Maine won six events, including three on the track. Cassidy Hill kicked off the first-place finishes by earning the fastest in the 200m, recording a time of 26.07. The sophomore also placed fourth-place in the 100m (12.47).

In her first outdoor event of her career, freshman Catherine Christiansen won the 400m, crossing the finish line in a time of 1:01.33.

Other top Black Bears included Tiffany Tanner and Brittany Torchia, who both earned second place performances in the 800m (2:20.24) and the 400m hurdles (1:08.10), respectively. Lauren Magnuson took third-place in the 100m (12.40), while Elisabeth Redwood also earned a third-place finish, crossing the finish line in the 400m in a time of 1:01.76. Kaitlin Saulter grabbed fourth in the 3000m (10:41.84) to round out Maine's top individual runners.
