Former UMaine track standout perseveres through injury, earns trip to Winter Games as US bobsled team alternate

...Reed is headed to South Korea as one of two alternate bobsledders for the U.S. In that role, he can substitute for athletes in training runs and, if an athlete suffers an injury or an illness, Reed can fill in his spot for the games.

Though Reed set three track and field records as a hurdler and sprinter at the University of Maine, he realized his college success wouldn’t translate into a professional career.

His track coach was a bobsledder and promoted the sport, which led to Reed taking up the sport upon his college graduation.

With norovirus scare at Olympics, 1,200 told to stay in their rooms
Olympics organizers say the spread began Sunday when private security workers started complaining of headaches, stomach pain and diarrhea.

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea — Signs posted around the Olympic venues urge extreme caution. Nine hundred troops stream into the area to help. Worried organizers sequester 1,200 people in their rooms.

Officials are scrambling on the eve of the biggest planned event in South Korea in years — not because of anything related to North Korea and national security, but in an attempt to arrest the spread of norovirus at the Pyeongchang Games.

Local media are fretting over a “virus panic.” South Koreans, always quick to air their views online, have poured scorn on the government’s response and preparations. Are the games hygienic? What will people think about South Korea? Could this spread to the athletes?

Currier ready for Olympics

Russell Currier of Stockholm is in South Korea preparing for the Olympics. The difference in time is interesting PyeongChang 15 hours ahead of the Eastern Time Zone and eight hours ahead of Europe. Members of the US Biathlon and Biathlon Squads are adjusting their sleep patterns because the Biathlon events will be held in Prime Time in Europe. That means late to bed and up at 11 am Korean time for Currier and his teammate

Cape Elizabeth Olympic biathlete is a true Renaissance woman
Whether its singing or chatting in Korean, Clare Egan aims to get the most from her Olympic experienc

...Egan, now 30, still has a knack for combining disparate elements into a satisfying whole. She will represent the United States in the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, as a biathlete, the unusual sport that combines precision riflery with cross-country skiing.

“Biathlon is very different from any other sport I’ve done,” she said. “The more pressure you put on yourself to succeed, the less likely you are to achieve it.”

Imagine trying to thread a needle after running a road race, and you get an idea of biathlon’s challenge. Competitors ski through the woods with a .22-caliber rifle strapped to their back. At measured intervals, they glide into a shooting range and attempt to hit five targets from either prone or standing position. Missed shots mean penalties, in either time or added distance.
