Final Columbia 83 Maine men 71

Postby bcbc55 » Sat Dec 30, 2017 4:29 pm

Columbia 69 Maine 39 with 11:09 TO GO IN GAME. Columbia led at the half 46 to 27. Another poor day from beyond the arc for Maine as they were 3 for 13 at the half.for 23%. Looks like a blow out win for 1-10 Columbia as they will snap their 9 game losing streak if they win. Maine will have lost their 7th in a row (NCAA's don"t count UMPI and UMM wins in RPI's). Will have final game results as soon as box score is posted. Not able to watch game on line as it is a pay deal $9.95 instead of watching it listening to it on 1230am radio. Not even having Live Stats available.

Maine does exactly what it did against UMass last week after trailing big at the half they outscored the Minutemen to lose by a dozen. Same thing happened today trailing Columbia 46 to 27 on the road at the half and down by 30 69-39 with 11:09 to go outscored the Lions 32 to 14 in the last 8:51 to close the gap to 83-71. They outscored Columbia in the second half 44 to 37.

Stats for the game furnished by 1230am WGUY in Bangor

Columbia was 31-67 from the floor for 46.1% Maine went 23 of 62 for 37.%
Columbia went 10-28 from 3 point land for 35% and Maine after going 3-13 from beyond the arc in the first half they went 5 for 14 in the second half to finish up at 8 for 27 for 29%.

Maine took 27 3 attempts out of 62 FGA's for 43.4% while Columbia took 28 3 attempts of 67 FGA's for 41.9%

Columbia was 21 for 39 for 2 pointers for 53,8% and Maine was 15 for 35 for 42,8%

Maine struggled from the line only going just 17 for 28 for just only 60#. Maine missed 11 fouls shots as Columbia made the perfect 11 for 11 for 100%.

Maine out rebounded the Lions 43-39. Columbia had 22 assists, Maine only 7 of 23 hoops. Columbia committed 11 turnovers to Maine's 13.

Steals, Lions 8 Maine 6.

Blocks Lions 5 Maine 1

Points in paint: Columbia 36 Maine 28.

Columbia had 4 players in double figures while Maine had 2 Calixe with 19 who also broke Skip Chappelle's long standing record of 32 consecutive foul shots made when he hit his lst foul shot of the game to set the record at 33 and then increased it to 34 after making the second fou shot, Vern Lowndes off the bench had 11.

Maine drops to 1-12 vs. D-1 competition and 3-12 overall and Columbia snapped their 9 game losing streak to go to 2-10 with one game left in their non conference schedule.

Same old same old. Living and dying by the 3. 1 life and 12 deaths versus D-1 opponents. No inside-outside game, no inside-outside game to get open 3's, no dribble penetration and kick outs to get open 3's. Double figure minutes for double figure players. Poor foul shooting, poor 3 pointing shooting and poor man-to-man defense (some zone maybe?) Play game from shoulders down, relying on the players athletic skills with is the reason for poor basketball IQ's which leads to poor basketball decision making which leads to poor shot selection because Walsh allows the players to decide who shoots, where the shoot from and when they shoot, more turnovers, poor assist to FGM's % and increased charging fouls and defensive fouls..

The only light at the end of the tunnel is that the rest of schedule is against the weak America L'east conference teams which is the 27th ranked conference in RPI and the next to last S0S (Strength of Schedule) of 32 D-1 conferences.

Maine completes it's non conference schedule and looks for to their opening America L'east Conference schedule when they visit Stonybrook next Wednesday January 3rd.

Ok, it's official....A roster of all Maine natives could win 2 D1 games.
We're still waiting for that elusive second one for the 2017-18 Black Bears. We have reached a new low for UMaine Men's Basketball. Columbia had 1 win. Maine put their typical window dressing on this at the end, but this game was a massive blowout.
It cannot get any worse than this....UGH!

Anyone that thinks this will end well is delusional.

Walsh needs to move on....for his own sake...and ours. :|

Fleming had very good first half. Rebounds. points, no fouls. Then he sits the entire second half??????

The state of this roster isn't all his fault, but here we are...
4 or 5 D1 bodies. Poor size, poor shooting, terrible defense, no post presence, no point guard. The schemes don't fit the roster. Time to hit the reset button. Maine needs to either get behind this program with funding or dump the program. Maine's salaries for the staff are a joke. On campus facilities are terrible. Support from the president through the athletic department is a joke. There are no fans because the team has fallen into a pit of misery. Have to go all in, or dump it in my opinion.

Ryan Bernstein was a good pg that did not turn the ball over and Walsh did not want to give him a scharship

Too bad coaches at UMane don't answer questions anymore...it would be interesting to ask Walsh a few.....

If they are not going to fire Walsh until the end of the season then I say April can not get here soon enough as far as I am concerned, BUT if Creech decides to get rid of him now by some strange chance, and Simon takes over I really would like to see how he does before the season ends.

Simon certainly can not do any worse. It is conceivable that with Walsh at the helm, Maine may not win another game this season which in itself is a self fulfilling prophesy.

It is strange that Creech would allow this nonsense to continue, contract be dammed..

bbbfan: Certainly agree as Calixe is a shooting guard not a point guard and JUCO junior transfer Araujo is not a D-1 point guard as shown by his time at point.

Walsh said that he didn't have a scholarship for Ryan Bernstein, he had them , he just didn't want to give Ryan one and he certainly earned one as he played some games for 40 minutes and did a better job then anyone Maine has had at point guard this year and that has come back to haunt Maine so far this 1-12 season so far. Maine needs to move Calixe to shooting guard and Arajuo has not been the answer in the situation with him at point and Calixe at shooting guard.

Frustrating, Bernstein was the closest thing to an actual point guard they've had and they let him walk. Moss, is head and shoulders better than Bernstein and he has no offer. I see this a lot in struggling programs, the coach is convinced he can recruit an athlete or small two guard and convert him to the point. It doesn't work that way. IMO
