McCallie, Vachon reunite for Duke-UMaine women’s basketball game

Joanne P. McCallie has an impressive resume.

The Brunswick High School All-American player and former University of Maine women’s basketball coach is in her 11th season as the head coach at Duke University in Durham, N.C.

On Tuesday night, she will welcome a former player, Amy Vachon, to Cameron Indoor Stadium when the Blue Devils entertain Vachon’s Black Bears.

In 26 years as a head coach, McCallie’s teams at UMaine, Michigan State and Duke have compiled a record of 597-219 with 20 NCAA tournament appearances.

The RPI figure for Duke is very misleading; they are the 14th ranked team in the country according to both polls.

Maine19Fan: Not in the realtimerpi.com poll, they are 56th.What 2 both polls are you referring to?

Duke did moe up to 50 wiyh the win over Maine who dropped from 76 to 77.

How about those hot shooting Maine Bears from beyond the arc 6-43 for`13.9% while taking 67% of their FGA's as 3's on 65 attempts and 43 3 attempts, talk about living and dying by the three? However, all was not lost they did break the record of 41 3 point attempts in 2014 vs. UMBC.

Tonight the could have been in a helicopter in the midde of the Atlantic Ocean and they couldn't throw it in the ocean because they wold have tried to throw it in the ocean but it would hit the blade on the attempt.

MaineBBFan99: Thise two polls do not figure in the selection or seedings for the 68 teams the RPI does that is why I go with realtimerpi.com and also Realtimer does not count those non D-1 wins. Counting those games against D-2, D-3, NAIA 1, NAIA 2 and USCAA teams is real misleading.

Completely agree that RPI is not a good comparison point at all at this point. Once Maine moves from playing multiple top-25 teams back into its normal AE play, we can expect to see its RPI drop quite a bit, due to the *huge* weight that is placed on strength of schedule.

Yes, it stunk that Maine was shooting so poorly tonight. I don't necessarily credit Maine's poor shooting to any amazing defense on the part of Duke (though clearly they are a very skilled team overall) - Maine was getting plenty of wide open looks, they just weren't making them. Realistically, if we wanted to have a shot at beating Duke, we needed to take (and make) a lot of 3s. I think once this team moves into AE play, we'll see a much more balanced mix of the shots taken (as we'll be much better matched to the AE opponents all-around).

We had less turnovers than Duke did (12 vs. 19). More offensive rebounds. More steals. More shots taken. The fight, the spark, whatever you want to call it, was there (holy cow, does Tanesha work hard every minute she is in the game - she really is an incredible player, and I hope she gets to shine in AE play). Fanny and KJ both were playing confidently as well (which we will definitely need, come conference time). Always a bummer to lose, but I feel like we're continuing to see lots of promising things from this team.

mainah57: agree with your entire post except that I do';t follow polls I follow rankings even this early in the season. I don't care what people think I want to know rankings which come from figures, cause "Figures don't lie", but Polls can be like politics they are no better then the polticians or the people voting in the polls.

Enjoyed your interesting post and your evaluation of the game and the season so far.
