Guerrette finds harmony in religion, running

BANGOR, Maine — Tracy Guerrette is in California this weekend, seeking an accomplishment she thought she already had achieved.

Guerrette, the St. Agatha native and former University of Maine basketball player who has developed into one of Maine’s top long-distance runners, was thought to have qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic women’s marathon trials on Oct. 1 while winning the Maine Marathon in Portland.

Her time of 2 hours, 43 minutes and 47 seconds not only was 15 minutes faster than her previous best for the 26.2-mile distance at the 2016 Boston Marathon, it eclipsed the 2:45 clocking required to meet the ‘B’ standard to earn a spot in the U.S. Olympic trials.

Former Black Bear Spagnuolo named interim New York Giants head coach

ORONO - When former University of Maine football head coach Jack Cosgrove first worked with Steve Spagnuolo, they were both young guns looking for a break.

"He's a heck of a coach and person," Cosgrove said Monday, the same day Spagnuolo was named interim head coach of the New York Giants. Spagnuolo, the team's defensive coordinator, replaces Ben McAdoo, who was fired Monday afternoon. General manager Jerry Reese was also let go, as the team drifted into obscurity this season with a 2-10 record to this point.

NE Hockey Journal‏ @NEHockeyJournal
Maine roots have greatly shaped Derek Damon's hockey career: "I learned how to skate on the Alfond. I learned how to skate just by hanging on the back of (my dad’s) jeans."

From Orono to Denmark, globetrotting Damon leaves a positive impact
With his piloting skills acquired in the United States Air Force, Colonel Doug Damon was happy to put his skillset to use to help the coaches of the University of Maine on the recruiting trail. So, it comes as little surprise that his son, Derek, would quickly grow fond of the Black Bears. He even got to tag along on a few of his dad’s trips. Derek reminisced, "In the summer of ’91 or ’92, I remember going for a run around Lake Placid with Shawn Walsh, and him saying, ‘One day I want to see you playing for me up here.’"

Former UMaine track star named a replacement on U.S. Olympic bobsled team

Jimmy Reed, a former track star at the University of Maine who holds three school records, has been named a replacement on the United States bobsled team and will travel to PyeongChang, South Korea, for the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

The 2014 UMaine graduate, who was born in Bloomington, Indiana and is a native of Garmisch, Germany, can substitute for competing athletes during training runs and will also be eligible to compete in the event of an injury or an illness. He is one of two replacements on the bobsled team.

Former UMaine track standout perseveres through injury, earns trip to Winter Games as US bobsled team alternate

...Reed is headed to South Korea as one of two alternate bobsledders for the U.S. In that role, he can substitute for athletes in training runs and, if an athlete suffers an injury or an illness, Reed can fill in his spot for the games.

Though Reed set three track and field records as a hurdler and sprinter at the University of Maine, he realized his college success wouldn’t translate into a professional career.

His track coach was a bobsledder and promoted the sport, which led to Reed taking up the sport upon his college graduation.
