'Cats Host BU In Home Opener Wednesday (7 p.m.)

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire women's basketball team opens up their home schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. at Lundholm Gymnasium. The Wildcats will be hosting the Boston University Terriers, who come into the contest with a 1-0 record. The Wildcats are coming off their 71-66 overtime loss to Xavier last Saturday, Nov. 11.

THE STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

UNH pushed Xavier of the Big East to overtime in its opener Saturday night in Cincinnati. The Wildcats led late, but the Musketeers tied the game and forced overtime with a three-pointer with one second remaining.

The Wildcats went 26-6 overall last season and were 15-1 in the America East Conference to grab their first outright regular season league title. They return a veteran group – led by reigning America East Player of the Year Carlie Pogue and three others who won league postseason honors - from their record-setting campaign.

The returning players combined to score 55.7 points of the 61.3 points UNH scored per game last year. Pogue averaged 16.6 points and 7.9 rebounds a game last year to lead the Wildcats in both categories and pull down the program's first Player of the Year honors in nearly three decades.

UNH was picked to finish sixth in last year's America East preseason coaches' poll. Coach Maureen Magarity's squad was picked to finish first in the preseason poll this year.

Pogue was also a first-team All-Conference pick last year. Senior forward Kat Fogarty averaged 10.4 points and 5.8 rebounds and was named second-team All-Conference. Brittni Lai and Olivia Healy both were named to the All-Conference third team. Lai averaged 11.1 points and 3.3 assists a game and Healy scored 8.7 points and pulled down 5.7 rebounds.

The 2016-17 Wildcats set a program record for wins (the previous mark was 23 in 1982-83) and with its regular season league title earned a spot in the WNIT.

SCOUTING BOSTON UNIVERSITY

The Terriers won their opener against Northeastern, 74-73, on Nov. 10 at home.

In the win, junior Payton Hauck led the team with 15 points. Senior Sophie Beaudry, a 6-foot-5 senior, scored 14 points and recorded six rebounds. Freshman Katie Nelson started the first game of her career, recording nine points, eight assists, and five rebounds.

Last season, BU finished 13-17 overall and was 11-7 in the Patriot League. The Terriers were 5-10 on the road last year.

UNH and BU met last year at BU on Nov. 28, resulting in a 59-51 win for the Wildcats. Lai had 19 points and six assists to lead the Wildcats. Fogarty had 15 points and three blocks and Pogue had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Katie Steding is in her fourth year as BU's head coach. Former Maine player and head coach Cindy Blodgett is in her fourth year on the staff and first as associate head coach. Steding and Blodgett were teammates with the Sacramento Monarchs of the WNBA during the 2000 season.
