Nick Mayo looks to the season, and his hoops future
Messalonskee graduate and Eastern Kentucky standout drawing interest from NBA scouts.

...This fall, scouts from a handful of NBA have attended an Eastern Kentucky practice to get a better look at Mayo. Scouts from the Cleveland Cavaliers, Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Detroit Pistons have dropped in to the Richmond, Kentucky campus, and according to EKU head coach Dan McHale, all have been impressed with Mayo.

“He’ll play in the NBA someday,” McHale said of Mayo. “He’s still young (Mayo is 20). They love his youth, his size, and his demeanor.”

After the season, Mayo can attend NBA scouting combines, where he can get further evaluation. If scouts tell Mayo he’s a likely draft pick, he can leave school. If they tell him he needs more time in college, as long as Mayo does not sign with an agent, he can withdraw his name and return to the Colonels.

“He can always test the waters,” McHale said. “The NBA gives you feedback.”

These were my thoughts when I first saw him as a senior. Comments which were quickly dismissed on this site as being "too ambitious" I might add. :)

Very grounded and personable. He will do well. On another note, after seeing him play in person. I think his upside is similar to Tyler Hansborough of the Toronto Raptors. Similar body type and athleticism. With some luck and four years of hard work and avoiding the injury bug we may see him on a bigger stage someday, whatever that might be. :)

More athletic than Tyler Hansborough. My belief has been reinforced, Nick will play on the NBA stage.

Coach: And he will be the first Maine high school player to ever play in the NBA.

The only Maine born player was a player named Turner who was born in Bangor, but moved out-of-state before he entered elementary school. I believe he had a 10 year career in the NBA.

I agree Coach. He's got all the tools to play in the NBA. I saw that James Harden was in attendance for the EKU/Rice game last night. I'd love to hear his thoughts on Mayo.

Another 25 points in a loss last night. This following a well balanced team scoring game that resulted in a win.

Tied for 64th in the nation for scoring.

As far as his NBA prospects go I'm afraid Mayo can't cut the mustard.
