New defense has Cape Elizabeth in a familiar place
The Capers are back in the Class C South final after adjusting defensive formations and continuing to shut down opponents.

...“We had to change our defense for the first time in over a decade,” Filieo said. “I did it reluctantly. My defensive staff had to convince me.”

Gone was Filieo’s preferred 5-2, featuring a nose guard over center, two tackles and a pair of defensive ends across the line. This year they’ve gone to a 4-4, using more players with mobility at defensive end and outside linebacker – guys like Jacob Budischewsky, who Filieo said is “the heartbeat of the defense,” as an outside backer.

“We have another guy like me, (Jack) Tower, and last year we were both strong safeties,” said Budischewsky.

In the old set, Budischewsky or Tower would be a backup. Now both are starting outside linebackers.

“Our team has a lot of skinny, athletic guys. So the (4-4) just put us in a better situation to put the best guys on the field,” said Budischewsky, one of Cape’s four captains.

Relentless line leads to defensive dominance for Gardiner football
Success in the trenches spurs Tigers to C South championship game.

GARDINER — Pat Munzing is enjoying his job these days.

Munzing is the Gardiner Area High School football team’s defensive coordinator, which means he’s the one calling plays for a red-hot Tigers defense that has slowed, stymied and shut down one offense after another, and turned Gardiner seemingly overnight from an also-ran into a championship contender.

And at its heart is the defensive line, one that Munzing can use to wreak all the havoc he wants.

Gardiner, Cape Elizabeth take different paths to brink of C South football title
Tigers and Capers built similarly with ground games and quality defenses.

...On paper, it suggests a close game, as was the case when they last met and Cape Elizabeth (8-2) came away with a 21-13 victory at Hoch Field. But that was nine weeks and over 40 degrees ago, and according to both coaches, the rematch instead has a first-time feel to it.

“It feels like it was an eternity ago,” said Tigers coach Joe White, whose team is on a four-game winning streak after starting 1-5. “We weren’t quite comfortable yet on either side of the ball. … It was our second game, and we were kind of feeling our way.”

“That first game feels like it was such a long time ago,” Capers coach Aaron Filieo said. “A lot has changed since then. It was a competitive game, and I think signs were there that both teams would have a good defense as the season progressed. But at that point, it was just so foundational.”

The teams have found their stride now, however. And they’re ready for a showdown with a state championship bid at stake.

Cape Elizabeth ends Gardiner’s run, reaches Class B title game

...Gardiner, winners of four straight games entering Friday’s frigid showdown, finished at 5-6. Cape Elizabeth improved to 9-2 and will head to Orono for the Class C final.

“I’m disappointed in our performance,” Tigers coach Joe White said. “Cape was certainly ready to play. They certainly know what it’s like to play in a C South championship.

“It didn’t turn out the way we wanted, but in retrospect, the season was a positive change and a move in the right direction.”

An injury to Jack Glanville, suffered in the semifinal victory over Fryeburg, robbed the Capers of one of their best players and seemed poised to slow their vaunted running game.

Instead, it just meant more of Weare, which was hardly a break for the Tigers. The senior, braving the bitter cold and wind with sleeves hiked up to his shoulders, ran 39 times for 183 yards and three scores as Cape Elizabeth jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

Cape Elizabeth wins Class C South championship
The Capers head to the state title game after a 35-13 win over Gardiner.

...The victory put the Capers (9-2) in the state final for the second time. They will seek their first Gold Ball when they take on Skowhegan (7-3) next Friday night at the University of Maine.

“We hang our hat on our defense and are proud of … the way it works,” Cape Coach Aaron Filieo said. “We wanted to keep their offense off the field so they didn’t get any rhythm.”

Cape quarterback Andrew Hartel, who doesn’t play defense, said the proud group wasn’t happy allowing any points when it came in allowing 8.5 per game.

“Five turnovers, that was crazy,” he said. “Our defense, after (Gardiner) scored, they got (angry).”
