Goaltending a bright spot for UMaine men’s hockey team

...Junior Rob McGovern made 27 saves, including 10 Grade-A (high-percentage) stops, in Friday night’s 2-1 loss and freshman Jeremy Swayman made 35 stops, including 15 Grade-A’s, in Saturday’s 2-0 setback.

“Our goaltending was terrific both nights,” said Gendron.

“We wouldn’t have been close in those games if it wasn’t for them,” said junior defenseman and alternate captain Rob Michel.

Swayman lowered his goals-against average to 3.15 and raised his save percentage to .900 with his performance, while McGovern improved to 4.16 and .892, respectively.

Men's Hockey Skates Past UMass Lowell, 6-2

LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman Eduards Tralmaks scored two goals and added an assist while classmate Jeremy Swayman made 28 saves in goal to help lift the University of Maine men's hockey team to a 6-2 win over UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon at the Tsongas Center. Five different players scored goals and five different players had multiple points for the Black Bears in the Hockey East road win.

Swayman was tested just 20 seconds into the game off of a face-off play, but the freshman stuck out his right pad and stuck with the play to stuff Connor Sodergren's attempt at circling around towards the left post. Swayman continued to be strong early for the Black Bears making some key stops through traffic.

UMaine turned the momentum quickly, though, and Tralmaks soon gave the Black Bears the 1-0 lead when Chase Pearson stole a puck at the boards and fed a pass across the slot towards the left post where the freshman slammed it inside the left post past Wall. It took less than six minutes for UMaine to make it 2-0, as Daniel Perez picked the puck off in the slot turned to goal and popped the puck between Wall's legs.

The Black Bears kept up the pressure early in the second period and it paid off just 2:54 into the frame, as Perez picked up the puck in the neutral zone and skated in with Brady Keeper. The two Black Bears were able to open up some space and Perez hit Keeper with the puck near the left post where he put it into the net.

Again, Swayman made a couple key saves to preserve the lead for the Black Bears, including a sliding chest save near the left post on a high shot from Jake Kamrass. Swayman's saves kept the overall edge in play in UMaine's favor and soon Tralmaks wristed a rocket from the right dot just under the crossbar to make it a 4-0 lead at the midway point of the game. Tralmaks goal was assisted by Mitchell Fossier and Pearson.

The teams traded power-play goals in the final frame, with Fossier finishing the puck at the left post as he fell to the ice while Ryan Dmowski put one in for the River Hawks. John Edwardh added one more goal for UML before time expired to give the game its final 6-2 score.

Tralmaks finished with three points while Fossier, Keeper and Perez each had two points on one goal and one assist and Pearson had two points with two assists. Swayman finished with his 28 saves while Wall had six and Chris Hernberg, in relief, had 14. UMass Lowell (4-6-0, 1-5-0 HEA) held the final edge in shots on goal (30-26) over UMaine (3-5-0, 2-2-0 HEA).

Maine will have a week off before playing a two-game set with BU. The Black Bears and Terriers will face off at Alfond Arena on Nov. 17 before heading to Portland on Nov. 18 for a battle at the Cross Insurance Arena.
