Skowhegan continues Class A field hockey dominance

...With 22:22 left in the game, after an extended scrum in front of Skowhegan goalkeeper Leah Savage, Mary Keef scored for the Blue Blazes to decrease the deficit to 2-1.

“We had never seen them play before, we had just heard about them, got a few scouting reports,” Westbrook co-coach Theresa Hendrix said. “So we weren’t quite sure what we were in for. I think once we made those adjustments for how they played and what we saw, the girls were able to get a little bit of confidence and start playing our game.”

Westbrook’s best efforts kept getting turned away over the final 20 minutes, though, so 2-1 was as close as it could get.

“I think our defense held up well,” Doughty said. “We gave up a goal, but in a game like this, you sort of expect to give up a goal.”

Skowhegan holds off Westbrook to win Class A
The Indians win their 15th championship in the past 17 years.

...The Indians, making their 17th consecutive appearance in the state championship game, finished 17-1. Westbrook, making its first appearance in a state game since 1980, was 14-5.

“We win a lot so people would think it’s not a big deal,” said Steeves, “but it’s a big deal every year. Every year we get so hyped we love it. And our community is so supportive. We get really hyped up for it.”

Skowhegan dominated the first half with quick, accurate passing, and midfield defense led by Alexis Vashon.

It didn’t take long for Skowhegan to score. Just 3:14 in, Hatch made it 1-0.

Skowhegan wins 15th title in 17 years
Indians hold off Westbrook to extend reign in sport.

...“It’s just really exciting,” said Hatch, a sophomore forward and one of the Indians’ many underclassman contributors. “We worked hard as a team all year, so it’s exciting to be here and winning.”

Indians coach Paula Doughty wasn’t overjoyed in the moments following the win, a muted reaction that stemmed from Skowhegan’s lukewarm second half. Nonetheless, she took satisfaction from her team’s accomplishment, calling the opportunity to play for the state title a “privilege.”

“I’m really proud of our kids,” she said. “To get through the schools that we did to get here, and play a great school like Westbrook, this is a real honor for us.”
