WESTERN NEW ENGLAND ADVANCES OVER UNE IN CCC QUARTERFINAL

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- First-half tallies by Maddie Morgan and Brooke Labrie lifted third-seeded Western New England University past No.6 University of New England, 2-0, in the opening round of the 2017 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Women's Soccer Championship, which began Saturday afternoon (Oct. 28) at Suprenant Field.

The Golden Bears (10-7-2) move on to meet second-seeded Roger Williams University (which rallied for a 3-1 win over Salve Regina) in the semifinals. Interactive Bracket

UNE concludes the season with a record of 8-9-2.

Western New England converted its first shot of the day with just 1:49 gone, as Danielle Dixon sent in a cross from the right side and Morgan booted it into the upper-left corner. In the 36th minute, Labrie stole it from a defender at the top of the box and chipped it over the keeper for a 2-0 cushion.

That was enough for goalie Alex Lemehka and the Golden Bears' defense, which held the Nor'easters without a shot attempt in the the 2nd half. For the game, WNEU posted sizable margins in shots (18-1) and corners (9-0).

Emily Ashman notched six saves for UNE.

Beavers Fall in Quarter Finals Against New England College

HENNIKER, N.H.—A header goal by senior Jaycie Triandafilou (Newburyport, Mass.) in the 49th minute would be the difference-maker as the third-seed New England College women's soccer team downed the sixth-seed Maine-Farmington Beavers on Saturday afternoon in the North Atlantic Conference quarterfinals.

With the victory, NEC improves to 8-8-2 overall and advances to the NAC semifinals on Tuesday at No. 2 Castleton. UMF sees their season come to a close at 7-11-0.

SCORING
48:04 | NEC – Jaycie Triandafilou (Nicole Cotrone)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half was a scoreless battle, despite an 18-2 advantage in shots for NEC. Six of NEC's 18 first-half shots were on-target.

Things changed in the early minutes of the second half, as the Pilgrims earned a corner kick. Nicole Controne's () kick was in perfect reach of Triandafilou's head, and she placed it into the left side of the net for the score.
