UMaine men take on Husson in exhibition opener
... “I think they really go hand in hand,” said UMaine sophomore forward Andrew Fleming, the Oxford Hills of South Paris product who was named to the America East All-Rookie Team last winter after averaging 10.7 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Black Bears.

“We’ve been practicing for a few weeks, and just getting to know the guys and how they play has been a big thing. Off the court, a lot of guys stay with each other off campus and just being around the guys as much as we can really helps build that chemistry.”

Fleming figures to be one of the on-court leaders this winter along with 5-foot-11 guard Aaron Calixte, the former Lee Academy standout and fourth-year Black Bear who played in just five games last winter before being sidelined with a fractured foot.

“We do have a new offense and we do have a new defense so we do put a lot of time into that,” said Calixte. “But a lot of it is building relationships on and off the court with the new guys we have.”

I was going to but I refused to pay $12 for GA to an exhibition game vs a D-3 team.

Agreed on the $12. They need people in the seats. Multiple people complaining at ticket booth.

aechamps: Junior 6'0" Aaron Calixe at point guard 10 points, 2 for 2 from 3 point land, 4 assists and 6'6" senior guard Ilker Er at guard 10 points and 12 boards both played well in their first competition against out side teams since they were injured and lost for the season last year Calixe after 5 games and Er after 11 games. Isaiah White the 6'5 sophomore JUCO transfer impressed as well with 17 points, 3-5 from beyond the arc and 4 steals. 6'7" sophomore Andrew Fleming had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. 6'1 JUCO guard Trae Bryant looked the next best of any of the JUCO transfers after White with 10 points and 4 assists..

Those 5 starters impressed the most. Probably that is why they started the game in the first place and did not disappoint.

Maine started Calixe 22 minutes, Fleming 29 minutes, Er 22 minutes, sophomore JUCO's transfer White 23 minutes and 6'1" JUCO Junior transfer Trae Bryant 31 minutes.

Players off the bench and playing minutes were: Junior Ilija Stojilikvic 18 minutes, Sophomore 6'5" Danny Evans 17 minutes, Red shirt soph 6'1" Dennis Ashley 16 minutes, Juco Junior Vernon Lowndes 17 minutes, Red shirt Sophomore transfer from LaSalle 6'5' guard Dusan Majstovoc 4 minutes, 6'9" 245lbs. freshmen Miks Antoms 2 minutes, and 6'1' JUCO junior Celio Araujo 1 minute.

Of the players off the bench Evans played well in his 17 minutes with 5 points and 7 rebounds and Ilija S. had his moments also in his 18 minutes with 8 points.

5 players did not dress. Senior 6'1" guard Garvey Melmad, 6'6" Junior JUCO transfer Douglas Duncan, 6''4" guard. 5'8" redshirt Soph Vincent Eze, 6'4" freshmen guard Rob Birstonas, and freshmen guard 6'1" Lewis Wang.

Big man 6'9" 245lbs. freshmen Mik Antoms only got 2 minutes, that was the BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT FOR ME TODAY FOR MAINE as 6'8" Vincent Eze looks like he is out for the season with hip surgery and the more minutes Antoms gets the better. In a 15 to 20 point game against a D-3 team most of the way in the 2nd half I don't understand why he didn't get more playing time.

I saw all of Antoms tapes that were on MBR and was impressed with him as he prepped a year at Lee Academy here in Maine.

But I don't see the practices so I guess just have to trust the coaches of why he didn't get more court time today forcing them to play Fleming at 6'7" in the post who was a forward last year with Eze in the post position.

Without Antoms on the floor Maine is small. It will be tough to match up against bigger teams with Eze out probably for the year without Antoms in the lineup.

Eze in my opinion is not as good as Antoms is right now offensively. But Antoms not starting and only getting 2 minutes is not my decision anyway,...JM0.. just my opinion again.

Hope this answers any questions you have AE about the player personal today.

All the stats above came from the final game stat sheet handed out by UMaine stat man at the end of the game.

White, Fleming Pace Maine Past Husson in Exhibition, 84-63
Isaiah White and Andrew Fleming combined for 30 points

..Isaiah White, a transfer from Harford Community College, impressed in his preseason debut, finishing with 17 points on 7-13 shooting, including 3-5 from beyond the arc. White also recorded four steals, three rebounds and two blocks in 23 minutes played.

Sophomore Andrew Fleming picked up where he left off last season, as the 2016-17 America East all-rookie shot 4-of-5 from the field, and made all four free throws he attempted for a total of 13 points. Fleming caromed five boards and was one of four Black Bears with four assists.

Ilker Er recorded a double-double, as the senior brought down a game-high 12 rebounds, and tallied 10 points, along with two steals. Trae Bryant, a transfer from Cape Fear Community College, also reached double-figures in scoring, finishing with 10 points on 4-7 shooting. Bryant contributed four assists, four rebounds, and two steals in 22 minutes of work.

Maine nearly shot 50 percent from the field as a team (31-63), and made 42.9 percent of three-point attempts (9-21). The Black Bears excelled behind the charity-strike, knocking down 13 of 14 free throws. Maine dominated the paint, outscoring the Eagles 42-16.
