UMaine looks to keep its momentum going at Albany
The Black Bears know there's little room for error if they want to get back into the CAA playoff picture.

...“When you look at the big picture, we’ve got to win a lot of games from here on out, if not all of them,” said redshirt freshman quarterback Chris Ferguson, who was the CAA Rookie of the Week after throwing five touchdown passes against Rhode Island. “But you try not to put that in your head. We have to just focus on Albany. That’s all we can do.

“With that win, it gives us more confidence going forward into the next couple of weeks – that’s the offense we have, that’s the things we can do.”

Coach Joe Harasymiak said his players learned last week that staying focused on your next opponent has positive benefits.

A week earlier, he said he thought the Black Bears, including himself, weren’t totally focused on Villanova, resulting in a 31-0 loss. They spent much of the week talking about the result of that game – what it would do for their season – rather than focusing on their game preparations.

UMaine (2-3, 1-3) at Albany (3-3, 1-2)
The Black Bears face the Great Danes on Saturday.

... OUTLOOK: Again it comes down to whether Maine can run the ball effectively against a solid run defense. If Mack gives Maine any kind of running game, it will be in good shape. Special teams, again, will be a factor. Maine ranks first in the CAA in punt returns (17.1 yards) and kickoff returns (24.1 yards), and got a punt return for a touchdown last week from Micah Wright. Albany ranks second in punt returns (11.4 yards) and third in kickoff returns (22.2).

OF NOTE: Last week Josh Mack became the first Maine RB to rush for over 200 yards twice in a season since Carl Smith in 1989. … Maine senior CB Najee Goode is expected to play with broken ribs, suffered in last Saturday’s 51-27 win over Rhode Island. He’ll wear extra padding. Senior S DeAndre Scott, however, will miss his third consecutive game and fourth overall with a concussion. Maine is still without junior DL Uchenna Egwuonwu, who is suspended. … The Great Danes are missing star junior RB Elijah Ibitokun-Hanks, who rushed for nearly 1,400 yards last year but suffered a knee injury in the season opener. … Albany is coming off its bye week and is 2-0 at home … Maine is 3-1 at Albany.

Maine football survives, beats Albany 12-10

...Another close game heading into the fourth quarter, games that Maine has lost in the past.

But not on Saturday as stout defense and the leg of Brandon Briggs helped lead the Black Bears to a 12-10 victory over Albany.

Missed field goal helps Maine top Albany
The Black Bears prevail, 12-10, when Albany kicker Ethan Stark misses a 44-yard attempt with 4:36 remaining and the defense holds on.

...Briggs drilled a 37-yard field goal 43 seconds into the second quarter to cut the deficit to 7-3. Wright then caught a 34-yard pass from Ferguson with 3:51 left in the half and after the conversion kick failed, Maine held a 9-7 lead.

Wright’s touchdown capped a three-play, 50-yard drive. He slipped behind the defense and hauled in the perfect lead pass from Ferguson.

“We know we need to maximize our potential each week,” Ferguson said. “We hold each other accountable and it was great to win a conference game on the road.”

Improved defense backstops UMaine football team’s second straight victory

... “We have guys playing on third down who don’t play on first and second downs. We have special group packages,” UMaine head coach Joe Harasymiak said during Monday’s weekly Colonial Athletic Association teleconference.

“It’s very important for our guys to fit into an identity and the staff has done a great job coming up with a game plan,” he added.

Harasymiak said their third-down defense proficiency allowed them to be more aggressive and get to the quarterback with some three-man rushes.

UMaine held Albany to 13 first downs and 262 total yards, 163 through the air and 99 on the ground.
