Costly Patriots mistakes belie Bill Belichick’s teachings

Bill Belichick teams don’t beat themselves. That’s always been a trademark of his teams. Fact, not opinion.

Belichick-coached teams rarely lose a game because they’re not disciplined, or commit penalties at the absolute worst moments. It just doesn’t happen.

Death by stupidity is usually what happens to the other team. Not Belichick’s group. That’s why this latest rash of penalties really raises an eyebrow.

The Patriots played what was easily their best defensive game of the season, which was unexpected considering they entered without two of their top three cornerbacks, Stephon Gilmore and Eric Rowe. Career special-teams standout Johnson Bademosi stepped in, and to the surprise of many, the Patriots stomped all over QB Matt Ryan, WR Julio Jones and the Falcons, 23-7, in a lopsided Super Bowl LI rematch.

Stephon Gilmore has corrected his course with Patriots

FOXBORO -- Devin McCourty could barely wait for the question to finish before he started answering.

He knew what he wanted to say because he had lived it himself. At the root of the discussion was cornerback Stephon Gilmore and his improved play. The query was whether Gilmore’s early season struggles and adversity had actually proven to be a positive in the long run -- allowing the player to reveal his true character to a new locker room.

“I kind of look at everything similar to when I played corner here,” recalled McCourty in an almost empty Patriots locker room. “When you play corner, you already feel like you’re on an island by yourself and then when it doesn’t go well, you’re like, ‘[shoot], I am by myself out here.’ It gives you a very resilient attitude. I’m just going make my plays.”
