UNH Hockey: Richard Boyd overcomes battle with Crohn’s disease

...Boyd applied for and received a medical redshirt, meaning he has one more year of athletic eligibility left after this season should he choose to use it.

Following his latest relapse, doctors prescribed a medication called Remicade, which is administered every other month during a three-hour infusion.

“Right now it’s a miracle drug to me,” Boyd said. “It’s helped me gain back 50-plus pounds and get back my strength. ... You still have good days and bad days, that’s just the way it is. It’s all about what you eat and how you eat and the way you live your life daily and the stress levels and stuff like that.

“At first it was difficult, obviously being away from home and not having my parents around to help me. I’d call up my mom and ask what’s a good recipe? I love cooking. That’s one of my favorite things to do outside of hockey.”

Young blueliners give UNH an added dimension

...Gildon and Benton Maass, both freshmen, are rangy, puck-moving defensemen who have played integral roles at both ends of the ice in the Wildcats’ hot start.

Gildon scored his first two college goals in a 5-0 win over the Raiders and Maass had three assists in the two contests as UNH improved to 4-0 and moved up to No. 17 in the Division I national rankings.

“It’s the way that they get us out of the zone,” said coach Dick Umile. “That’s less time that we play in the defensive zone because we can get the puck out of the zone. They can get us out with good decisions handling the puck.”

Crisp breakout passes are essential to the Wildcats’ transition game.
