Maine women's hockey picks up accolades

..The Black Bears earned two votes in this week's USCHO.com Division I women's hockey poll, the same as the Quinnipiac squad it beat when it was ranked No. 9 in the country. Maine comes off a strong performance against then-No. 10 Robert Morris this weekend, splitting the two games and starting the year 4-2. It is the best start for Maine in six years.

Freshman goalie Loryn Porter also earned Hockey East Rookie of the Week honors for her efforts in knocking off Robert Morris 5-2 Saturday, stopping 38 shots in her first ever start.

UMaine women's hockey confident ahead of Hockey East play

ORONO - At 4-2, the University of Maine women's hockey team is off to its best start in six years. But now is where the test begins.

The Black Bears will host Boston University Friday afternoon to kick off its conference slate successfully, something that daunted the team last year. Last season, Maine notched just three wins in conference play, though against top teams in Hockey East. And it thinks with this year's unique makeup, it has a chance to make a run.

Maine women's hockey rises in USCHO poll

...Head coach Richard Reichenbach said the promising start has been enjoyable, but it's important to stay locked in the moment.

"It's definitely better than losing. I definitely agree on that," he said. "But it's still really early. We're just getting into Hockey East play. There's so many things that can happen either way, so we're just trying to take one game at a time."

Women's Ice Hockey Drops Close Match, 2-1, to UNH
Weis Nets First NCAA Goal

DURHAM, N.H. -- All the action occurred in the first period on Saturday afternoon in the matchup between the Maine Black Bears and University of New Hampshire Wildcats (UNH). Despite an early goal by Michelle Weis in the first minutes of the game, the Black Bears couldn't comeback from the two goals scored by the Wildcats in the opening frame, dropping the match, 2-1 to UNH.

The Black Bears found themselves in an immediate power play in the first minutes of the game picking up an early force of momentum. After firing multiple shots towards Wildcat's goalie Ava Boutilier, Weis skated after a shot by line mate Vendula Pribylova, knocking the puck into the back of the net for her first NCAA goal. Pribylova grabbed her second assist of the season.

Tying up the score, 1-1, with 6:40 remaining in the first frame, Carlee Turner tucked away the puck past Maine goaltender Carly Jackson for her first goal of the year. Assists were given to Taylor Wenczkowski and Jenna Rheault.

Breaking into a 2-1 lead with two seconds left on a UNH power play, Wildcat's Julia Fedeski skated into an opening for a clear angle finding the top shelf with 3:12 remaining in the first period. The puck was passed off by Meghara McManus and Carlee Toews for assists.

Black Bears Fall to Dartmouth in Game 1 of Weekend Series

HANOVER, N.H. -- Maine dropped their first match at the Thompson Arena on Saturday afternoon against Dartmouth this weekend, 3-0, despite outshooting the Big Green 37-27.

The Black Bears (5-5-0, 1-2-0 WHEA) had an exciting moment on their first power play of the game midway through the second frame, as the puck broke loose in front of Dartmouth's net, both teams crashed on top of it until it escaped out of the pile right under Big Green goalie Christine Honor's glove.

Dartmouth's (2-3-0, 1-2-0 ECAC) Sabrina Huett opened up the scoring in the match, 13:42 into the second period as the puck knocked off her stick from a slap shot by Hailey Noronha. Huett earned her first NCAA goal with this point. The Big Green held onto this 1-0 lead going into the third period as both teams displayed a strong attack with 19 shots apiece.

Swooping in with a backhander, Cecilia Lopez was shut down on her first attempt by Maine's goaltender Carly Jackson, but just barely tapped the puck from behind as she skated off and saw her own rebound slowly glide over the goal line. Helping the Big Green increase their lead to 2-0 with 15:54 on the clock in the final period was an unassisted goal by Lopez for her first of the season.

The Black Bears controlled the puck in the final minutes of the third period, making a last attempt to cut the score deficit by pulling Jackson from net for an extra man on the ice with 2:45 remaining. Despite a huge defensive block by Anna Zikova in the final seconds of the match, Maine couldn't quite protect their empty net as Kate Landers found it open with only 12 seconds left to close out the match with a win for Dartmouth, 3-0.

Honor stood strong in between the pipes for the Big Green, achieving 37 saves while Jackson grabbed 24 saves for the Black Bears.

Maine will have a chance at redemption against Dartmouth tomorrow, Sunday, Nov 5 at the Thompson Arena with a 2 p.m. puck drop.
