Oak Hill football holds off Poland

POLAND — Oak Hill freshman quarterback Gavin Rawstron had a memorable first start Friday.

The Poland Knights? Not so much.

The Knights gave momentum away early, and by the time they got it back it was too late. Oak Hill ran out to a 28-0 lead and held on for a 28-14 victory.

Aaron Paradis returned the opening kickoff 22 yards for Poland (0-1), then ran the ball twice for 16 yards to put the Knights past midfield. But on his second carry he fumbled, turning a good start on offense into an early turnover.

Oak Hill:: Big plays power Raiders past Clippers

Big plays power Raiders past Clippers

...The big plays kept coming, mostly from running back Cruz Poirier, wide receiver Darryn Bailey and quarterback Gavin Rawstron, as Oak Hill rolled to a 36-12 victory over the Class C Clippers.

Poirier rushed for 189 yards, including touchdowns of 82 and 52 yards, and Bailey and Rawstron connected on touchdown passes of 71 and 21 yards.

"It starts off with the linemen. The linemen have to have great pass blocking," Bailey said. "I think we could have passed all game because our linemen are just that good. Gavin is pretty confident in the pocket, so it's just there."

Oak Hill football overwhelms Yarmouth for second straight win
Raiders start fast, strike often in all phases in commanding win.

...“Their defense is pretty aggressive,” said Oak Hill coach Stacen Doucette, whose team improved to 2-0. “We had to make adjustments. It was a very, very aggressive defense, and you’re not always going to be successful against aggressive defenses. We had to pick and choose our moments, so to speak.”

Austin Pierce led the Oak Hill defense with a 51-yard interception return for a touchdown, while a physical unit led by D.J. Pushard, Poirier and Bailey Drouin sacked Yarmouth quarterback Noah Eckersley-Ray five times and bottled up his rushers until the outcome was no longer in doubt.

“We did (get into the backfield) a couple of times, we changed it up, and tried to keep it simple,” Doucette said. “I’m happy with the way we played. Some of the defensive ends played well at times and the outside linebackers played well at times. (It was) team defense.”

Oak Hill:: QB Rawstron showing polish, poise as freshman sta

Oak Hill QB Rawstron showing polish, poise as freshman starter
First-year player settling in as field general for Raiders offense.

... “My very first year here, my very first clinic at Oak Hill, we saw him throw a ball six years ago,” Doucette said, “and we knew someday he’d be our quarterback.”

Someday got here quickly. Rawstron won the Oak Hill starting job as a freshman and has shown steady signs of progress and promise, leading a Raiders offense that despite the team’s 2-3 record has clicked, scoring 23.6 points per game and keeping Oak Hill in the thick of a chase for a Class D South playoff spot.

“I think he’s done a good job of giving receivers ability to make plays,” Doucette said. “He also makes smart choices. I tell him every game ‘It’s OK to punt.’ Make smart choices and get rid of the ball in a timely fashion. … I think he does a pretty good job with that.”
