Early goals give Bangor boys soccer 3-0 win over Edward Little

BANGOR - A Joseph Dagher goal just minutes into the game ultimately set the tone for Tuesday night's game for Bangor boys soccer, as Class A North positioning was on the line against Edward Little.

The Rams blanked the Red Eddies 3-0 under the lights, improving to 8-0 on the season.

‘The chemistry is there:’ Stingy Bangor boys earn regional ranking

...The defending Class A state champions, 8-0 and top seeded in Class A North this fall, are ranked fourth in the USA Today/United Soccer Coaches Region 1 (New England) poll released this week.

Coach Garth Berenyi’s club, winner of its last 23 countable games, trailed only No. 1 Manchester (New Hampshire) Central High School, No. 2 E.O. Smith High School of Storrs, Connecticut, and No. 3 Nauset Regional High School of Eastham, Massachusetts, in the regional poll.

Bangor, which also received votes but was unranked in the USA Today/United Soccer Coaches national Super 25, is the only Maine team in the Region 1 top 10. And that ranking does not include the Rams’ last two matches, Tuesday’s 3-0 victory over previously unbeaten Edward Little of Auburn and a 3-0 win against Messalonskee of Oakland last Friday.

Bangor puts end to Mt. Blue's late rally

...But the Cougars' last-minute heroics were not enough as the undefeated Rams held on to a 4-2 victory in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference boys’ soccer game at chilly Caldwell Field on Tuesday evening.

After Bangor senior forward Kyle Jeffrey scored on a penalty kick with 7:14 left in the game, the Cougars revolted and their insurgency netted two goals just minutes apart.

Sam Smith shattered the Rams’ would-be shutout on a breakaway goal at 4:31.

With 1:36 in the game, Mick Gurney scored on Aiden Thompson-Vougl assist after Smith nearly scored on another breakaway.

“We played better in the second half,” Mt. Blue coach Joel Smith said. “Three set pieces — just asleep on our own goal kick at the beginning and that set the tone of the game and we struggled to dig out — and unfortunately two goals in the last four minutes of the game doesn’t win us a game — especially against a state champion like they are.
