Freeport girls make history, stun Cape Elizabeth in opener

FREEPORT—Emotions were at a fever pitch for Freeport’s girls’ soccer team during Friday afternoon’s regular season opener versus Cape Elizabeth at Hunter Road Fields.

The Falcons started out hopeful, as they were able to hang tough with a Capers squad they weren’t expected to compete with, thanks in large part to strong play from freshman goalkeeper Carly Intraversato.

Just before halftime, however, Freeport’s hopes took a jolt when one of its pivotal players, junior inspirational leader Abbi King, suffered an apparent concussion and have to leave in an ambulance. ... in-opener/

Freeport overcomes slow start, shuts out Gray-NG

...“We knew they were very good with their high game. We were prepared to see some of that,” Freeport coach Elayna Girardin said.

Another save by Intraversato off a Thayer header with 20 seconds remaining in the half secured the scoreless half. The Falcons outshot the visitors by a 10-6 margin in the opening half.

“I thought we played very lethargic in the first half. It didn’t seem like we wanted it. We were watching and weren’t participating in the game,” Girardin said. “I told them at halftime, I don’t really care what you do at this point but play hard, play with heart, play like you want to be here, and play with some passion. If we do that, I told them everything will fall into place.” ... ng/2200101

Freeport girls solve Waynflete for first time since 2005

FREEPORT—Never mind the fact that Waynflete’s girls’ soccer team is the defending Class C South champion or that Freeport hadn’t beaten the Flyers in a dozen years, at halftime of Monday afternoon’s midseason showdown at Hunter Road Fields, the Falcons’ coaching staff felt like they should have the lead.

And the coaches let Freeport’s players hear about it.

The Falcons had some good chances in the first 40 minutes, but had nothing to show for it and when the second half began, they paid heed to their coaches exhortations and went out and made history. ... ince-2005/

Freeport figures out Waynflete for 2-0 win
The Falcons score two goals in the second half to break open a tie game and beat the Flyers.

...“We came out with a very specific game plan in terms in how we would organize the back and the midfield,” Waynflete Coach Jon Shardlow said. “We executed that exceptionally well. Unfortunately, they were able to break that down in the second half on the field.”

It took some time for Freeport to figure how to play against the short passing game employed by Waynflete, which is contending for a berth in the Class C South playoffs.

“Waynflete has very strong center mids, so our center mids had to defend,” Girardin said. “It took (our midfielders) a while to learn that they couldn’t get away with playing the higher-up style of play that we’ve been able to play our last two games.” ... waynflete/

Freeport fends off Wells
Jessie Driscoll scores twice in a 2-1 victory for the Falcons.

...Freeport improved to 7-3. The Warriors, who went winless last year, are still in the playoff hunt at 6-5.

“Today was the first day I felt she was finally back to herself,” Freeport Coach Elayna Girardin said. “That’s what she does – she’s fast, got those long legs and she does a good job of peppering (from) the back.”

Driscoll missed a few games with a deep thigh bruise and this was her third full game back. She adds another offensive threat behind leading scorer Catriona Gould, who saw a lot of attention from Wells. ... off-wells/
