Kennebunk:: triumphs in double overtime, 2-1 vs Windham

Kennebunk tops Cheverus with buzzer-beater
A last-second goal by freshman Emily Archibald gives the Rams a 1-0 win in their return to the SMAA.

...“This is amazing. It was an awesome team win and my teammates were there to support me the whole time because, this being my first game, I was extremely nervous and they were backing me up from beginning to end,” said Archibald.

Archibald narrowly missed a goal with 1:40 left in regulation. She had a one-on-one opportunity as she gained separation from the defense, but Samantha Belaire made a great defensive play to preserve the tie, forcing Archibald to take a difficult shot that went wide of the net.

“As you get tired, you don’t get quite as compact as quickly and you don’t drop quite as quickly. That nearly hurt us on that play, but Sam Belaire made a great hustle play to cover for our center backs,” said Cheverus Coach Craig Roberts.

Kennebunk tops Gorham in playoff rematch
Kennebunk, which nearly ended Gorham's playoff run last season, wins an early-season meeting.

... “We have to be ready for every team to give us their best game,” Gorham Coach Jeanne Zarrilli said. “Tonight, I think we weren’t.”

Howarth, a sophomore midfielder, scored with 12:56 left in the first half when she drove down the middle of the field and arched her shot over Gorham goalkeeper Michelle Rowe.

“A friend told me to run through the ball, and I did,” Howarth said. “She (Rowe) was bending down to stop it at my feet, and I popped it up over her head.”

Kennebunk triumphs in double overtime, 2-1
Miranda Durcan scores on a rebound with 18 seconds remaining to defeat Windham.

...“I just saw Caitlin going and I was like, ‘I’m going to go for it. That really was (Caitlin’s) goal. I was just there to finish. It was her hustle,” said Durcan.

Roberts was outstanding in goal for Windham (6-3-1), finishing with 12 saves.

“Kaitlyn (Roberts) played a great game tonight. She kept us in it,” said Windham Coach Deb Lebel.

Kennebunk (7-3-1) dominated both overtimes, when it outshot the Eagles, 4-0.

“These ladies are working hard at practice,” said Kennebunk Coach Shannon Cavanaugh. “We’ve been talking a lot about urgency, playing with urgency, and today they did.”
