UMAINE SPORTS HALL OF FAME PROFILE
‘Coming to Maine changed my life:’ Competitive drive helped softball star excel

When Ashley Waters was carving out a terrific softball career at the University of Maine, she took note of the “all the plaques of (UMaine) Hall of Famers on the wall in the Memorial Gym lobby.

“In the back of my mind, I wanted to be on that wall someday,” said Waters, the head softball coach at Boston University.

On Sept. 8 Walters will be one of eight inductees into the UMaine Sports Hall of Fame.

“It’s surreal. I’m so humbled and honored. I can’t wait to celebrate with my family,” said the 31-year-old Waters.

College World Series trip highlight of Belfast native’s baseball career

Dave “Zippy” Thompson said he never thought about being inducted into the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame — or any hall of fame.

So when he found out that he was being inducted into the UMaine hall next month, he was caught completely off guard.

“Was I surprised? Good Lord…,” said Thompson, the captain and third baseman for the Black Bears’ 1964 College World Series team. “I was very pleased. I was very humbled by it because there were players who were far better than I was. For an old goat like me, it is a terrific honor.”

Thompson, a left-handed hitter, led the Black Bears to a 3-2 record and a third-place finish at the CWS in Omaha, Nebraska. He hit safely in all five games and batted .315 average to earn a spot on the all-tourney team.

UMaine men’s hockey program built success on Standbrook’s recruiting savvy, knowledge

“It obviously means a lot. It’s awesome,” said Standbrook, who is enshrined in the Manitoba Hall of Fame. “I’m very thankful and appreciative.”

Standbrook won three NCAA championships during his 12-year tenure as an assistant at the University of Wisconsin prior to coaching at UMaine. He was the 2005 winner of the Terry Flanagan Award given to the nation’s top assistant coach.

Between UMaine and Wisconsin, Standbrook has helped develop 67 National Hockey League players.

Standbrook, who retired from coaching in 2013, said coaching was always a labor of love.

Old Town native launched impressive hockey broadcast career at UMaine

Gary Thorne had never broadcast a hockey game before he took over the play-by-play gig for the University of Maine’s hockey team in its infancy. The Black Bears made their debut in the 1977-78 season, spending their first two seasons in ECAC Division II before moving up to ECAC Division I.

“I had followed the Bruins all my life. I was a hockey fan. But hockey was the last sport I did as a broadcaster. So I did the same as I would with any other sport. It’s all about reading and research. There isn’t a magic formula,” said Thorne, an Old Town native who will be inducted into the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame on Friday night and is currently handling television play-by-play chores for the Baltimore Orioles games on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network.
