#Oxford250: Running the 250 a costly endeavor

... In the shop of 2016 winner Wayne Helliwell Jr., team owner Bruce Bernhardt and his driver have been working overtime to prepare.

“It takes literally hundreds of hours and a lot of money to make a serious attempt at this race,” Bernhardt said. “When I used to work with the Dions, they took a month to get ready for the 250. We've been busy getting ready for weeks now."

Rubber meets road

One of the biggest money siphons is one shared by every team at some level: tires.

Hall claims Granite State Series 100

...Fourteen-year-old New Hampshire drive Gabe Brown started fourth on the 27-car grid and crossed the line second, while Kruzek settled for third. Justin Drake and Bobby Timmons completed the top five.

Tyler King (Street Stock); Ben Tinker (PASS Mods); Andy Hill (Northeast Classic Lites); Austin Teras (Legends); Jon Lizotte (Figure 8); Mark Theriault (Wicked Good Vintage Late Models); and Scott Grant (Wicked Good Outlaws) also won their respective features on the eve of today's Oxford 250.

“My car got pretty loose out there early on,” Hall said. “I had a chance to cool the tires make another charge. I don't know if Bryan's car started to go away or not, but I know my car definitely got better in the closing laps. I brought a different car for the 250, but after this, I might want to run this one.”

Oxford 250: Taylor, Gordon seek elusive crown
A win in Maine's biggest race remains the missing piece for veterans drivers Jeff Taylor and Tracy Gordon.

... While Rowe, who has 151 career feature wins at OPS, already has three Oxford 250 victories, neither Taylor nor Gordon has won the race despite several near-misses.

Taylor has been more successful at the track than anybody besides Rowe. He has 74 career wins at Oxford and a record nine track championships. What he doesn’t have is an Oxford 250 win, despite leading more than 300 laps. He has a pair of runner-up finishes and 10 top 10s in 17 career starts.

“It’s home,” said Taylor, 50, of Mercer. “I can remember sitting in the grandstands with my mother and aunt watching the races with them and just hoping to race someday. It’s so different from my generation versus the kids of today. They all want to be in (NASCAR) at 19; well, all I wanted to do was be on Oxford Plains Speedway.

THE OXFORD 250 IS SOMETHING SPECIAL

OXFORD, Maine — There is something special about the Oxford 250.

One can feel it — whatever it is — when they walk through the either gate.

Through the spectator gate, the fans are welcomed with a list of past Oxford 250 champions — 43 drivers long.

Through the pit gates, the tension is palpable.

On Sunday, after 13-plus hours at the race track, one driver’s racing life will change forever.
