Binghamton sweeps the 'Dogs, 4-1 and 5-1

Binghamton, NY - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (73-49) swept a doubleheader from the Portland Sea Dogs (59-63), 4-1 and 5-1, Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton received a complete game from both starters.

Game 1 Recap

Ricky Knapp (1-0) fired a 4-hitter in the opener, fanning nine in his '17 debut with Binghamton. Portland's lone run came in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Jordan Procyshen.

Henry Owens (3-4) suffered the loss, yielding all four runs in 5.1 innings. Binghamton scored three in the fourth off Owens. Gustavo Nunez had an RBI single and Kevin Kaczmarski hit a two-run homer. Binghamton added the fourth run on a wild pitch.


Game 2 Recap

In game two, Marcos Molina (2-9) earned just his second win of the season, hurling a complete game. Molina scattered seven hits, one run and fanned six in his first ever start against Portland.

The Rumble Ponies scored three runs off losing pitcher Elih Villanueva (4-5) in the fourth. Matt Oberste nailed an RBI double and then scored on a two-run home run by David Thompson. In the fifth, Tomas Nido delivered a two-out, two-run single off Trevor Kelley.

Portland scored their lone run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Cole Sturgeon.

The Sea Dogs and Rumble Ponies play a second straight twinbill on Saturday night, beginning at 5:35 PM from NYSEG Stadium. RHP Kevin McAvoy (5-7, 4.36) makes the start in Game 1, Portland has not listed their pitcher for Game 2.

The Portland Sea Dogs and Binghamton Rumble Ponies were suspended on Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. The two teams managed to play three innings in game one of a doubleheader, with no score. On Sunday, the game will be resumed in the fourth inning, followed by a seven-inning game.

The postponement of Game 2 will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Friday, August 25th beginning at 5:00 PM at Hadlock Field. Portland and Binghamton now have a five-game series in four days starting on August 24th.

Action on Sunday begins with the suspended game at 12:05 PM. Radio coverage with Mike Antonellis begins at 11:50 AM on the US Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network.

Binghamton, NY - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (75-49) beat the Portland Sea Dogs (59-65) twice on Sunday, 1-0 and 4-3 at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton delivered a walk-off hit in both games, and swept the four-game series from Portland.

Recap from Saturday's Suspended Game

RF Kevin Kaczmarski nailed a walk-off RBI double with one out, giving Binghamton a 1-0 win in eight innings. The game was suspended on Saturday after a two-hour rain delay and resumed on Sunday in the top of the fourth.

Tim Peterson (5-3) worked two scoreless on one hit to earn the win. Ty Buttrey (1-4) faced three batters and took the loss for Portland. Binghamton's Drew Smith retired all eight batters, including seven straight strikeouts to finish his outing.

Portland had just five hits, receiving two singles from Henry Urrutia.

Game 2

The Rumble Ponies scored three times off Bobby Poyner in the seventh inning, giving Poyner his first loss of the year. The 'Dogs led 3-1, but RBIs from Oberste and David Thompson set the stage. Kevin Taylor nailed a two-out, walk-off single down the right-field line. Poyner had his toughest Double-A outing, allowing three runs over 1.1 innings.

Portland took a 3-0 lead in the first inning off Corey Oswalt (10-5). Jeremy Barfield crushed a three-run homer, his 23rd big fly of the season. Oswalt went the distance, firing 6.2 scoreless after Barfield's homer.

RHP Teddy Stankiewicz took a no-decision, firing 5.1 innings on one run and seven strikeouts.

Portland shifts their roadtrip to Trenton, New Jersey on Monday night, opening up a three-game series with the Thunder (Yankees affiliate). LHP Dedgar Jimenez (4-0, 2.83) takes on RHP Brody Koerner (4-3, 4.25) at Arm & Hammer Park with a 7:00 PM first pitch.

Trenton, NJ - The Trenton Thunder (83-43) scored two runs in the seventh inning, and beat the Portland Sea Dogs (59-66), 3-1, Monday night at Arm & Hammer Park in the series opener. Portland has lost all five games on the roadtrip. Michael Chavis had a career-high 4 hits.

Trenton snapped a 1-1 tie off losing pitcher Jacob Dahlstrand (5-3). Nick Solak and Mike Ford had RBI singles in the seventh inning.

Lefty James Reeves (2-0) worked two innings on two hits to earn the win for Trenton. Andrew Schaab (save #1) fanned Josh Tobias with a runner at second base to end the game.


Trenton struck in their first turn, receiving an unearned run against Dedgar Jimenez. Jeff Hendrix led off with a single and scored on an error by 1B Josh Ockimey.

Jimenez was excellent for Portland, hurling six strong innings on four hits, one unearned run, two walks and five strikeouts. Trenton starter Brody Koerner fired 6.2 innings on eight hits and one run.

Portland tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning with three consecutive baserunners. Chad De La Guerra began the rally with a walk, Josh Tobias singled and Chavis nailed a run-scoring double.

Tobias extended his hitting streak to seven games. Henry Urrutia went 2-for-3 with a walk.

The Portland Sea Dogs and Trenton Thunder (Yankees affiliate) continue their three-game series on Tuesday night from Arm & Hammer Park. Portland sends lefty Trey Ball (6-10, 5.46) to the hill for his 23rd appearance of the year. Trenton has RHP Jose Mesa Jr. (2-0, 1.47) making a spot start. RHP Domingo Acevedo was the original starter, but was placed on the disabled list before Monday's game.

Portland, Maine - Kevin McAvoy worked 7.1 innings of one-run baseball and Bobby Poyner closed things out with the tying run in scoring position in the ninth as the Sea Dogs (60-68) ended a seven-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (76-52) in front of 7,128 fans at Hadlock Field on Thursday night.

McAvoy (6-7) allowed just one unearned run on six hits in 7.1 innings. He fanned five and walked four.

Poyner entered the game in a critical moment with two on and one out in the eighth inning. After a fly out and a walk to load the bases, Poyner struck out Gustavo Nunez to strand all three men and preserve the one-run lead.

In the ninth, Poyner allowed a leadoff double to LJ Mazzilli, but rallied to strike out the next three batters to end the game.

Binghamton stranded 10 runners and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, Marcos Molina (2-7) recorded two quick outs before walking Jordan Procyshen and Danny Mars back-to-back. Josh Tobias hit a double to the gap in left-center field to score both runners and give the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead.

Binghamton answered with an unearned run in the top of the sixth on a two-out throwing error by Chad De La Guerra on a play at first base that allowed Patrick Biondi to score from second.

Molina was excellent in defeat for the Rumble Ponies, allowing just two runs on three hits over seven innings while striking out five and walking three.

The Sea Dogs and Rumble Ponies play a doubleheader on Friday night at Hadlock Field, game one is scheduled for 5:00 PM. RHP Teddy Stankiewicz (4-5, 4.90) and RHP Mickey Jannis (7-6, 3.81) are the scheduled starters for game one.
