Maine soccer selected sixth in America East preseason poll

ORONO - Last year, the Maine soccer squad debuted a young core of players that perhaps was not aware of what was ahead of it. With a parity-filled conference, the Black Bears were thrust right into the middle of the pact, and ended up punching a playoff ticket. With parity expected once more in America East, the school now knows how its opponents view them.

The Black Bears were picked to finish sixth in the 2017 America East preseason poll, tied with UMass Lowell with 26 points overall. The Hartford Hawks were tabbed first in the conference with 58 overall points, though were second in terms of first place votes. Defending conference champion Albany took those honors with five, good for a second place overall selection.

UMaine Soccer Needs Players to Fill Roles, Camden's Messer is one of Them

ORONO, MAINE (WABI) - UMaine soccer is off and kicking. The Black Bears have been going for about a week now. Some familiar faces back, some transferred out, like standout scorer Vivien Beil who’s now at UConn. Some are new, like the 6 freshmen, including Camden Hills’ High School All-American Charlotte Messer. She is being converted from midfielder to forward already this fall. Head coach Scott Atherley says the changes from last year can be positive and his team has taken them that way.

Young UMaine soccer players look to grab opportunity

ORONO - After a handful of transfers and graduations, the University of Maine soccer team is not quite in rebuild mode. With that said, there are plenty of spots up for grabs, and that may be just the motivating factor the squad needs.

South Paris native Mikayla Morin a dependable workhorse for UMaine women’s soccer

...“First, she was versatile. She could play in the back, in the midfield and she could play on the right side or the left side,” Atherley said. “She literally played all over the field and she played the full 90 minutes.

“The second thing that jumped out at me was how technical she was. She had great insight for the game,” Atherley added. “She really had a good understanding of the game, and that enabled her to make good decisions and not get into any trouble with the ball.”

So the former Oxford Hills All-State midfielder and Bangor Daily News All-Maine Schoolgirl Basketball Team honorable mention decided to take Atherley up on his offer.

She made an immediate impact and has continued to be a reliable and resourceful defender for the Black Bears.
