Day 2 recap: American Legion Baseball regionals
EACH REGION SENDS TWO TEAMS TO THE FINAL OF THE WINNER’S BRACKET AND ELIMINATES TWO TEAMS ON DAY TWO.

Here is a recap of the day’s events:

Region 1 – Northeast – Shrewsbury, Mass.

Zero losses: Braintree (Mass.), Shrewsbury (Mass.)
One loss: Stamford (Conn.), Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine
Eliminated: Vermont, W. Hartford (Conn.)

It was a long day, but fans from the host state must be thrilled to see both teams set to square off in the final winner’s bracket game. Shrewsbury and Braintree both advanced, topping Stamford (Conn.) and Maine, respectively, to advance to Game 11. Rhode Island and New Hampshire stayed in the hunt with wins over Vermont and W. Hartford (Conn.), respectively. The heroes of the day were the staffs that helped prepare and execute seven games at two sites.

Shrewsbury opens American Legion Northeast Regional with pair of victories

WORCESTER — As a host, you always want to make a great impression on your guests. American Legion Northeast Regional Tournament host Shrewsbury did just that on Thursday.

After taking the morning opener against West Hartford, 9-1, Post 397 returned to the field 12 hours later to complete the Connecticut sweep, this time holding off Stamford, 4-2, at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

The two wins puts Shrewsbury in great position heading into Friday’s action, where it will face a familiar foe in Braintree at 8 p.m.

Braintree — the other unbeaten team in the tournament after wins over Rhode Island and Maine — beat Shrewsbury in the opening round of the state tournament last month.

Bangor Coffee News rallies past NH to stay alive in American Legion regional tourney

Zach Murray’s seventh-inning single drove home the go-ahead run as Bangor Coffee News stayed alive in the American Legion Northeast Regional Baseball Tournament with a 6-3 victory over Rochester, New Hampshire, at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field in Worcester, Massachusetts, on Friday afternoon.

The victory advances the Maine champions, 20-7 overall and 2-1 in the double-elimination regional, to a 10:30 a.m. game Saturday against Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, 2-0 and scheduled to play Braintree, Massachusetts, in a winner’s bracket game Friday night.

Bangor Coffee News, which trailed 3-1 after Rochester scored three unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning, will finish no worse than fourth in the eight-team event that concludes Sunday while the New Hampshire champions finished with a 1-2 tourney record.

Bangor Coffee News ousted from American Legion regional

Jack Gardner hit a two-run double and scored on Casey Boudreau’s single in the fifth inning as Shrewsbury (Massachusetts) Post 97 rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Bangor Coffee News Comrades in an elimination game of the American Legion baseball Northeast regional tournament Saturday.

The game, originally scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. start, didn’t begin until late afternoon because of inclement weather and was shortened from nine innings to seven innings after being moved to an auxiliary field in the area.

Shrewsbury, now 3-1 in the regional, advanced to the final day of the eight-team, double-elimination event. The Massachusetts team faces Stamford, Connecticut, in a 1 p.m. elimination game Sunday, with the winner to face unbeaten Braintree, Massachusetts, for the right to advance to the American Legion World Series that begins Aug. 10 in Shelby, North Carolina.
