Racing Roundup: Childs claims Outlaw Mini 75 at Wiscasset

Leeds short track pilot Jimmy Childs, of Leeds, finally turned his 2017 season around on Saturday night with a victory in the 75-lap tilt for Outlaw Minis at Wiscasset Speedway.

Childs has endured mechanical failures and wrecks this season, unusual for the all-time Mini Stock win leader at Oxford Plains Speedway. The win was his second in this specific event and first win of the season. Jake Hendsbee finished second (his career-best finish in this class), while Tim Collins filled out the podium.

Other feature winners at the popular mid-coast speedplant include Joe Williams (Modifieds); Bryan Robbins (Strictly Streets); and Shane Clark (Late Model Sportsman).

SJ Recap: Chubbuck, Ripley earn wins at Wiscasset

Short track masters Scott Chubbuck and Daren Ripley earned their second feature wins of 2017 in the headline Pro Stock class on Saturday, as Wiscasset Speedway completed another week of points racing for Group 1 divisions.

Chubbuck, of Bowdoin, won the makeup feature that kicked off the evening's program at Richard and Vanessa Jordan's recently-revitalized facility. Chubbuck held off longtime rival Ripley for top honors, while Newcastle veteran Charlie Colby filled out the podium in third.

Love of the game: Cory Creamer takes his drive to Wiscasset Speedway
Randolph racer has done it all at race track on the coast.

...Now, though, Creamer can add the one thing he’s always really wanted on his resume — racing in Saturday night competition at the track. Creamer is running a part-time schedule in Wiscasset’s Super Street division this season, and for someone who grew up playing with matchbox cars in the dirt out behind the grandstands at the .333-mile banked race track, it’s still sinking in.

“I remember watching in the grandstands and saying, ‘Those guys are so fast. I could never imagine competing with them ever,’ ” Creamer said last weekend after finishing ninth, nearly half a lap behind race winner Mark Lucas. “The goal is just to come out here and have fun with it, maybe be the only guy that races that still just has fun with it.”

A DJ by trade whose summers are usually filled with wedding dates and special events where Creamer supplies the party, he’s blocked out three Saturday nights this season for racing his car. Not coincidentally, the car he ended up with came via a trade, where he traded his DJ services at a wedding for a race car.

Melcher still on a roll at Wiscasset

Logan Melcher has been enjoying a dream season down on the mid-coast at Richard and Vanessa Jordan's Wiscasset Speedway. The second generation driver from Jay won his fifth consecutive feature in a makeup race for the Thunder 4 Mini class on Saturday night in convincing fashion.

Brian Sweatt, of Albion, finished second in that 25-lap makeup battle, while South China's Travis Poulliot filled out the podium in third. Spencer Sweatt (Albion) and Michael Golding (Pownal) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Tired out: Nick Jenkins earns Boss Hogg 150 win at Wiscasset Speedway
Apparent winner Garrett Hall DQ'd for unapproved tire.

...Turns out, Jenkins’ premonition was correct and the Brownville driver was credited with the victory early Sunday night after Scarborough’s Garrett Hall was stripped of his apparent win for the use of an unapproved tire during the event. Hall was disqualified, according to track promoter Ken Minott.

“It would have been nice to cross the line first, but we’ll take it,” said Jenkins, whose win was the first of his career in a 150-lap event. “A $5,000 check (for winning)? Yeah, we’re here.”

Hall, who led the final 40 laps following the last restart of the race on lap 111, pitted on lap 94 for two right side tires. As he was battling his way back through the field after the pit stop, Hall was spun by Mike Hopkins while racing for fourth on lap 103 and cut his left rear tire.

Recap: Erskine back on top at Wiscasset

Veteran Late Model racer Ben Erskine had the skills and proper equipment to win races for years. The easy-going truck driver (he hauls logs, lots of them) from Farmington endured a two-year drought at Wiscasset, but on Saturday night, that slump finally came to an end.

Erskine edged third-generation racer Ryan St. Clair by just 0.232 seconds to claim the 35-lap feature and get back to Victory Lane. Josh St. Clair finished a close third, while Sidney-based hotshoe Chris Thorne crossed the line in fourth. Brandon Bailey, of Woolwich, completed the Late Model top five.

Jimmy Childs has been on quite a roll in the Outlaw Mini class at Wiscasset. The veteran from Leeds almost had his third consecutive feature win on Saturday, yet thanks to a transponder mounted just off from its usual location, missed it by 0.033 seconds to winner and point leader Brent Roy.

Picard prevails in Pro Stock at Wiscasset

In the premier Pro Stock division down at Richard and Vanessa Jordan's beautiful Wiscasset Speedway, the competition is usually pretty tight. Often, it's tenths of a second that separates winners from second place on back.

Ajay Picard decided to end that streak of close finishes, blistering the field to win by over seven seconds on Saturday evening. Picard, of Palmyra, checked out as veteran Daren Ripley settled for a distant second. Newcastle's Charlie Colby finished third, over eight seconds behind the leaders.

Wiscasset continues hot racing on track in July
In month, track celebrates 48th birthday

WISCASSET — Nick Jenkins has had more than his share of heartbreak when it comes to big races. He's had victory snatched from his grasp in the closing laps in both the Coastal 200 and the Long John 100. This time good fortune smiled on him for a change as he picked up the biggest win of his career in a controversial finish to the 2017 Boss Hog 150 at Wiscasset Speedway.

Sunday's Pro Stock main event highlighted a busy doubleheader weekend at Wiscasset on July 29-30. Saturday night's program celebrated the race track's 48th birthday along with group 1 support divisions.

Winners Saturday included Sean Johnson and Josh Bailey in the Super Streets. Bailey taking over the points lead with his two podium finishes on the night. Logan Melcher and Travis Poulliot were victors in the Thunder 4 Minis. Melcher's five race win streak was snapped by Poulliot in the 40-lap nightcap race. Three-time defending champion, Kamren Knowles picked up his third straight win in the New England 4-cylinder Pro Stocks.
