Racing Roundup: Martin dominates SLM feature at Oxford

OXFORD — Multi-time track champion Shawn Martin of Turner put in a dominant performance on Friday evening, powering his way to victory in the 50-lap Super Late Model Trophy Dash at Oxford Plains Speedway.

Martin built a healthy lead early in the non-stop race, which took just under 14 minutes to complete. Martin's margin of victory was more than two-and-a-half seconds over Super Late Model rookie Ryan Robbins of Dixfield.

Robbins, a former Mod division champion at Oxford, claimed his first trophy in the premier class after taking second position away from reigning champion Tim Brackett of Buckfield. Brackett held on for a third-place finish, a highlight in a disappointing season for the driver with four titles to his credit

McDaniel picking up steam at Oxford

... For 27-year-old Scott McDaniel, of Livermore, the new season has been rewarding even in a part-time effort. The 10-year short-track veteran started off strong, with a second-place finish on May 27 and a solid, fourth-place run on June 3.

Now, as the month of August approaches and the 44th annual 250 draws closer, he's ready for more.

"We had an older car that was pieced together, and it just never went fast," McDaniel said. "So for this year, we had Jeff Taylor build us a brand new car at Distance Racing. It was fast right off the bat."

The increased speed and handling of Distance-built cars has been a big topic of conversation in 2017.

Brackett scores SLM victory at Oxford

Four-time champion Tim Brackett kept the streak of no repeat winners alive in the headline division, pulling away to victory in the Irving Forest Products Super Late Model Trophy Dash Saturday night at Oxford Plains Speedway.

Brackett, of Buckfield, had struggled in his role as defending champion for much of the season. A win in the first of three qualifying heats put him on pole for the 50-lap feature, and he led every lap to post his first win of the season.

Windham's JT Thurlow posted a career-best second-place finish. Thurlow made steady forward progress against top-notch competition with far more experience.

TJ Brackett earns second SLM win at Oxford

Two-time track champion TJ Brackett took the lead from Auburn's Travis Stearns for the final time with just six laps remaining and hung on to claim his second Super Late Model feature win of the season Saturday night at Oxford Plains Speedway.

Brackett, of Buckfield, who earned Pro Late Model titles at Oxford in 2013 and 2014, swapped the lead with Stearns a few times as they battled side-by-side in the closing laps. Brackett slowly began to pull away, and his margin of victory was just over a full second.

Auto Racing Spotlight: 17-year-old Shurtleff back on top at Oxford

DIXFIELD — Central and western Maine is blessed to have several aspiring young racers making their mark on the sport of short track stock car racing at an early age

At only 17, Dixfield native Shelby Shurtleff is one of those bright young stars with loads of raw talent, good skills and the determination to succeed. The 2015 Ladies division champion at Oxford Plains Speedway is enjoying another strong season in 2017, with a win and six top-five finishes in seven starts.

Shurtleff notched that first feature win of the year on July 26, vaulting her into the points lead. With only six races remaining, it's a position she'd like to hold until the final checkered flag waves on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Breton paying his dues at Oxford

...For 23-year-old Andrew Breton of Greene, that quest has been an uphill battle. In his third full season, Breton sits eighth in overall points, with nine top-10 finishes in his first nine starts. He's quick, he's consistent, and now, he's right on the cusp of that first podium finish.

"I think we're getting pretty close in the last few weeks," Breton said. "We've made some significant changes to the car, so I'm still getting used to how it handles. We just need to keep working at it, and I'm confident we'll get that trophy."

In 2015, Breton finished fifth in the final points rundown. Last year, competition was more intense and he wound up ninth when all was said and done. This season, the big guns (Childs, Mains and Matt Dufault) have made a trip to the podium much more difficult. It can be done — it just takes a tighter focus.

Hall notches SLM win at Oxford

OXFORD — Garrett Hall managed to hold off hard-charging rookie Gabe Brown, notching a victory in the 50-lap Super Late Model Trophy Dash Saturday night at Oxford Plains Speedway.

Hall, of Scarborough, became the 12th different driver to score a victory in Oxford's premier division this season. Hall led every lap, yet his margin of victory over Brown was a scant .260 seconds. Brown hails from Conway, New Hampshire.

Scarborough’s Donnie Colpritt was fast throughout the feature and earned a third-place finish, while Dixfield’s Scott Robbins crossed the stripe in fourth. Travis Stearns, of Auburn, raced with the leaders for all 50 laps and finished fifth.

Shaw claims SLM feature at Oxford

OXFORD — Defending Pro All Stars Series North champion DJ Shaw made a rare weekly visit pay off nicely, as he dominated the 50-lap Super Late Model Trophy Dash Saturday night at Oxford Plains Speedway.

Shaw, of Center Conway, New Hampshire, started 10th on the 18-car grid and quickly made his way into contention. He drove around the outside of early leader JT Thurlow coming off Turn 4 to take over the point on Lap 12, survived two mid-race restarts and pulled steadily away to a convincing victory.

Two-time track champion TJ Brackett made a late-race charge into second position, unofficially taking over the top spot in the battle for the points championship. Brackett's rise locks up a starting spot in next Sunday's prestigious Scott's Recreation Oxford 250, presented by Fastway Trailer Products.

McDaniel gaining speed in Bandits at Oxford

...For 17-year-old Addie McDaniel, that learning curve is coming along very nicely. The Bridgton native competes weekly in Oxford's highly-competitive Bandit division. In 15 starts this season, she's earned a pair of top-10 finishes and currently sits ninth in the point standings.

"The finishes haven't been quite where we'd hoped, but I really can't complain," McDaniel said. "It's been a hectic season, and there have been a lot of cautions lately.

"I've been trying to race hard but keep the car out of harm's way, and except for a few minor accidents, have been pretty lucky," she said. "I'm just hoping to get a little closer to the leaders without getting caught up in any trouble."

Poland's David Whittier in winning form at Oxford

POLAND — While most of the attention in Oxford Plains Speedway's Street Stock division this year was focused on veteran Billy Childs Jr. and his battle with Bryce Mains for the title, another driver was quietly going about his business a little more under the radar.

For 25-year-old Poland native David Whittier, the 2017 season has been nothing short of amazing. In 19 starts, the seven-year racing veteran has earned two wins, 11 top-five and an impressive 18 top-10 finishes. It's the kind of consistency that, in most years, would earn a points championship.

“It's been a combination of several things that brought our performance up to this level,” Whittier said. “My father has really helped me out a lot, plus we got a new engine this year
