Coffee News stays undefeated in playoffs with 2-0 win over Yankee Ford

BANGOR - The Coffee News Comrades have shown versatility not displayed by any other squad in the American Legion state baseball tournament this year. High-pressure defense, clutch hitting and dynamic pitching put the Comrades in position to take an undefeated slate into Saturday, but it would need to get past a tough Yankee Ford team in the process.

Bangor Coffee News shuts out Yankee Ford to stay unbeaten at Legion states

...The shutout was the third straight in the tournament for coach Dave Morris’ club, which at 3-0 is the last unbeaten team in the double-elimination event and has clinched a spot in Sunday’s championship round with the victory.

Bangor Coffee News, now 17-5 overall, is set to face once-beaten Coastal Landscape of Portland at 4 p.m. Saturday after defending state champion Yankee Ford plays Bessey Motors of South Paris in an elimination game at 1 p.m.

Stoddard, a recent Old Town High School graduate, scattered seven hits over eight full innings before reaching the 120-pitch limit. The right-hander struck out five batters, walked four and hit a batter while improving his postseason record this summer to 2-0.

Bessey edges Pastime in elimination game

...Luksa grinded through eight innings and Pastime stranded 11 base runners as Bessey edged its Zone 2 rival, 3-2, in the state American Legion tournament at the Winkin Complex on the campus of Husson University.

Bessey Motors will face Yankee Ford at 1 p.m. on Saturday in another elimination game.

"I wanted us to be more aggressive," Slicer said. "We changed the lineup a little bit (coming off a 2-0 loss to Bangor on Thursday). I think we had to be aggressive. Francis, I think, threw 15 straight strikes to start the game."

Attacking the strike zone allowed Francis to cleanly navigate the Bessey lineup with 19 pitches in the first three innings.

Coastal Landscape surges past Bangor Coffee News, forces three-way battle for Legion title

BANGOR, Maine — Coastal Landscape of Portland erupted for 15 runs in its final two at-bats Saturday to knock off Bangor Coffee News 18-4 during the fourth day of play at the state American Legion baseball tournament at Husson University.

The game ended after eight innings under the 10-run rule.

The win by the Zone 3 runners-up sets up a three-team battle Sunday for the state championship. Coastal Landscape will face Zone 3 winner and defending state champion Yankee Ford of South Portland at 1 p.m., with the winner to face Bangor Coffee News at 4 p.m. for the right to advance to the Northeast regional tournament that begins Wednesday at Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.

Yankee Ford stayed alive earlier Saturday with a 9-0 elimination-game victory over Bessey Motors of South Paris.

Bessey Motors bows out of American Legion baseball state tourney

... Yankee Ford tacked on another run in the second when Alex Livingston hit a single to left to lead the inning off. A sacrifice bunt and an infield single gave Yankee Ford runners on the corners with two outs. Catcher Wyatt Williamson made a throw on a pitch-out to second which was cut off by the second baseman Rodney Bean and thrown back home to get the tag on a running Livingston. The throw came in time, but after the tag and an initial “out” call by the home plate umpire, the ball was dropped and the call was subsequently changed to safe.

In the sixth, Ben Conti reached to lead off the bottom-half when the grounder to shortstop was bobbled. Conti stole second and was batted home off a Shea single to make it 5-0 in favor of the South Portland side.

Peterson gave up his second and only hit in the sixth inning, which impressed Bessey Motors manager Shane Slicer.

“He kept us off balance, he pitched well,” Slicer said. “I don’t know if it was tired bats by us, or he just pitched really well, but I gotta take my hat off to him. He did a nice job.”

Colford, Coffee News Comrades win Legion state title

BANGOR - Grinding through a big game is what Coffee News pitcher Jesse Colford has become accustomed to over the course of the past several years. He's been a key piece of Bangor baseball's ascent back to the top of the Maine baseball world, and was ready to take the mound for Sunday's American Legion baseball state title game against Yankee Ford.

Needless to say, he didn't disappoint.
